Lewis Hamilton was fastest during a wet first practice ahead of this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix. The 30-year old was just .149 of a second ahead of Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen.
The 17-year old is making his debut at the circuit impressed in the conditions and appeared to look at home on the streets of Monte Carlo. Verstappen completed 42 laps on circuit momentary going fastest. Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo beat his former team-mate Sebastian Vettel to third.
Carlos Sainz went fifth fastest, Lotus’s Pastor Maldonado was sixth, ahead of Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.
McLaren’s woes continued as Jenson Button failed to get out on circuit for an hour as he remained in the garage. McLaren said he didn’t get out because of a ‘systems check’ then he suffered some engine problems.
It wasn’t all plain sailing for his team-mate Fernando Alonso who joined the list of Kimi Raikkonen, Verstappen, Maldonado, Felipe Nasr and Will Stevens who all went down the escape road at the first corner, Sainte Devote.
Hamilton was four seconds quicker for the first 20 minutes, before the other drivers began to reduce the gap. His Team-mate Nico Rosberg had truble more than once brushing the barriers at many points but avoided the list who went off at Ste Devote.
