BELGIAN GP – Hamilton storms to Spa victory ahead of Rosberg
Lewis Hamilton stormed to victory beating his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg at the Belgian Grand Prix. The current world champion pulled away from the German at the start following a poor start.
Hamilton beat his team-mate in the incident packed race by two second after the threat of rain stayed off. There was also fear at Mercedes of a repeat of last year after Rosberg made a slow getaway off the front row.
The start of the race was bad after Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz failed to start because of a loss of power forcing the start to be aborted. Sainz said on team radio “Something’s wrong – there’s no power.”
Lotus driver Romain Grosjean took third place after Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel suffered a rear tyre failure with two laps remaining. Vettel was trying to get to the end of the race using two sets of tyres.
The Ferrari driver told BBC Sport “Things like that are not allowed – if that happens 200 metres earlier, I am not standing here right now.” His comments were ‘edited’ by the corporation because of the language used.
Hamilton victory is his sixth of the season opening his lead to twenty eight points and was his eightieth podium of his career equalling the achievement of boyhood hero and late triple world champion Ayrton Senna.
Daniil Kvyat held off the Force India of Sergio Perez who ran second at one point during the race for fourth. Williams had a silly error after they fitted three soft tyres and one medium to Valtteri Bottas who finished ninth while team-mate Felipe Masa finished sixth.
Fernando Alonso finished thirteenth ahead of his team-mate Jenson Button and both Manor’s of Roberto Merhi and Will Stevens who were the last of runners to finish the race.
