Lewis Hamilton has taken victory after taking the lead after hitting his team-mate Nico Rosberg on the final lap of the Austrian Grand Prix. The world champion passed his team-mate at Turn Two making contact with the German damaging his front wing.
It will be a relief for Hamilton after he thought a error would cost him after Mercedes messed up his pit stop. The race was incident packed with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel being forced to retire after his right rear tyre blowout. Tyre manufacturer Pirelli say the cause was debris on the track.
Hamilton insisted Rosberg was in the wrong and stated “I’m here to win, I won the race fair and square” after hearing boos on the podium, but a thunderous Toto Wolff branded the collision “brainless” hinting the team may reconsider their use of team orders.
Rosberg argued that “I had the inside position, a strong position, and went a bit deep into the corner. But that’s fine because I dictate – but l was very surprised that Lewis turned in and that caused a collision.”
Vettel’s tyre exploded on lap twenty seven when he was leading spreading rubber across the track on tyres which had done thirty laps this weekend. It will cause a augment between Vettel and Pirelli about who was responsible.
Max Verstappen finished second for Red Bull after Rosberg sustained damage in the contact on the last lap. Rosberg has been placed under investigation for failing to stop with a damage car. The race was breath-taking after Hamilton finally converted pole into leading at turn one.
Verstappen got past Raikkonen on the last lap as he struggled with his tyres after doing a one stop race.
Daniel Ricciardo finished fifth ahead of McLaren’s Jenson Button who managed to hold Romain Grosjean’s Haas.
There was even more drama as Force India’s Sergio Perez crash on the last lap because of a mechanical problem elevated Valtteri Bottas to ninth and Manor’s Pascal Wehrlein.
Wehrlein gives Manor there first points of the season and the first for what was Marussia since the 2014 Monaco Grand Prix. This will be treated a win after the teams collapse in 2014. While Manor celebrating the decline of Sauber continues with them being pushed to the bottom of the championship with no points this season.
