MALAYSIA GP: Hamilton takes pole in changeable conditions

Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position in a rain interrupted qualifying for the Malaysia Grand Prix ahead of Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel and team-mate Nico Rosberg.

In the first part of session the Manor of Roberto Merhi was first out on track as the team attempted there first attempt of qualifying. But everyone’s eyes remained on the skies with rain not far away. McLaren had another difficult day qualifying just ahead of Manor.

Manor had a difficult day not being able to set a time within the 107% rule and will need to apply to the FIA to race this weekend.

Teams wanted to get out early in the second session as the storm moved in meaning the drivers needed to set a time early on. It was a close for many as the fought for position. Nico Rosberg set the best time going faster than the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel.

As the weather turned the teams began to make changes to make the cars best suited to the conditions. Rosberg went fastest from Vettel and Bottas. Hamilton was complaining that he was out to late. But he still managed to get through to the final session.

Kimi Raikkonen failed after he got out too late on to the circuit as the weather turned. Both Force India’s also failed to make the cut for the pole shoot out.

The final part thirty minute delay the final the final part of qualifying got underway in wet conditions. The track did begin to dry out the spray was causing problems. Ferrari was close to the Mercedes who went a fraction faster.

In that final session Max Verstappen once again impressed going sixth fastest for Toro Rosso.
