Lewis Hamilton was fastest in the second practice for this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver was once again was faster than his team-mate Nico Rosberg who managed to close the gap from the mornings session with it now being .03 of a second.
Williams put in a strong performance to be third fastest with Valtteri Bottas, but they were almost half a second down on Hamilton’s best lap. Mercedes were also trying to manage their engine mileage during the session; they were in fact slower than they were during FP1.
It wasn’t only the Mercedes who were running slower than they had done in the morning it was Red Bull. Daniel Ricciardo was half a second slower than he was in first practice but he was a tenth faster than team-mate Max Verstappen.
Both the Ferrari’s were again struggling both on single lap pace and on their race pace with both Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen in seventh and eighth. These times were set on the soft compound, Raikkonen did set a good first sector.
Raikkonen is currently under investigation by the stewards after cutting across into the pit lane in front of Carlos Sainz midway through the session. The Fin went round the outside of the Spaniard as he entered the pits cutting across him.
It was a difficult afternoon for McLaren after Jenson Button was forced to spend most of the session in the pits with a gearbox sensor problem. His session then came to a early end after an exhaust problem.
As for Fernando Alonso, he was told to stop his car on track with what is believed to be an ERS problem, he finished eleventh. He then repeated his exploit from last year’s qualifying session finding a deckchair prompting the return of #Placesalonsowhoratherbe on social media.
Daniil Kvyat was a tenth faster than Toro Rosso team-mate Carlos Sainz with the pair just outside the top ten.
Marcus Ericsson spun his Sauber early on at Bico de Pato, Romain Grosjean complained of loss of power and strange handling on his Haas, and Pascal Wehrlein said his Manor was nothing like as good as it had been in the first session.
