Renault to stop supplying teams with engines

Renault is to stop supplying engines to Formula 1 teams as soon as possible. It comes after months were the manufacturer has been debating there future in the sport.

Carlos Ghosn, Renault’s chairman and chief executive officer, also hinted the company’s relationship with Red Bull is likely to end this year. The French manufacturer has been trying to take over the Lotus team which has been struggling financially.

The options had been

  • To buy back the Lotus team
  • Remain how they are
  • Leave the sport altogether

Ghosn told BBC News “Our future is the subject of detailed analysis and renegotiating. We will either exit or run our own team. We don’t have a clear decision yet.”

Red Bull is going through “necessary due diligence” to take another engine which would most likely be Ferrari.

Ghosn said Renault would “honour our contracts” but admitted the company was renegotiating “so it’s too early to say what’s going to be the conclusion”.

Since the introduction of the V6 engines Red Bull has accused Renault of failing to provide a competitive version.
