Former F1 driver Justin Wilson killed in Indy Car

News & Analysis

The indycar and former F1 driver Justin Wilson had died after a crash in which he suffered a severe head injury in the closing laps of a race on Sunday at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania, IndyCar officials said.

The 37-year old was transferred to hospital in a critical condition in a coma at a hospital in Allentown. CEO of the parent of IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway Mark Miles said “This is a monumentally sad day for IndyCar and the motorsports community as a whole.”

Miles added “Justin’s elite ability to drive a race car was matched by his unwavering kindness, character and humility — which is what made him one of the most respected members of the paddock.”

His family in a statement described Wilson as “loving father and devoted husband, as well as a highly competitive racing driver who was respected by his peers.”

It is four years since Dan Wheldon was killed in Indycar and on the same day Moto GP rider Marco Simoncelli died both deaths had an impact on F1. With the recent death of Jules Bianchi the whole of motorsport is ready for self-examination.
