The Red Bull driver-controlled much of the race from the start building his lead through the traffic despite Mercedes trying to throw everything at the Dutchman.

The start had been eagerly anticipated, the first since Verstappen and Hamilton came together on the opening lap at Silverstone. However there was no repeat of the drama, the Dutchman made a perfect start to hold the position through Tarzan opening up a 1.7-second lead by the end of the opening lap.

The Belgian-Dutch driver looked unstoppable as he steadily managed to grow the gap through the opening stint. Hamilton and his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas tried to go after Red Bull.

The German manufacturer tried to use him during the pit stop to hold up Verstappen allowing the Englishman to try the undercut by two stopping. But the Red Bull driver appeared to have enough pace to remain in control, responding a lap later they successfully overcut Hamilton, with Bottas yet to pit.

Mercedes made another attempt at the second stop, again Verstappen had the overcut remaining in the lead. The two title contenders remain separated by three points going to Monza next weekend, however, it’s now Verstappen who leads Hamilton.

Bottas finishing the race over thirty-five seconds behind Hamilton, on a long first stint, briefly led the race after the top two pitted for the first time but was only able to hold Verstappen at bay for so long before the Red Bull overtook.

The Finn was called in for a late tyre charge and, despite being urged out of it by the Mercedes pit wall, briefly took the fastest lap bonus point away from his team-mate which may be seen as growing hints that he is about to leave the team at the end of the year. But Hamilton managed to regain it on the last lap.

Bottas later claimed he “didn’t go for it”, and he did back off in the final sector, to make it easier for Hamilton to reclaim it.

Verstappen said, “Obviously the expectations were high going into the weekend and it’s never easy to fulfil that, but I’m just so happy to win here, to take the lead in the championship as well, It’s just an amazing day. The whole crowd… it’s incredible.”

Hamilton added, “Honestly it’s been an amazing weekend. Max did a great job, congratulations to him. I gave it absolutely everything today, flat-out. I pushed as hard as I could. But they were just too quick for us.”

Behind the top three leading the lapped cars were the Alpha Tauri of Pierre Gasly capping off another strong weekend by the Frenchman, finishing four seconds ahead of Charles Leclerc. For Gasly it was a slow drive despite fending off the Ferrari during the closing stages of the race, allowing him to hang on to fourth.

Leclerc was leading a Ferrari one-two in the closing stages, that was until Fernando Alonso sealed sixth place for Alpine, after getting past his fellow Spaniard Carlos Sainz on the last lap. Early in the race, the two-time champion had squeezed his way past his teammate Esteban Ocon, taking the high light through Hugenholtz to take seventh.

Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez took an engine change after a disappointing qualifying and thus started from the pit lane. The Mexican however was able to find his way through the field through a mixture of strategy and overtaking. One of his late moves saw him get past Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo using the undercut early on.

Perez’s former teammate Ocon also managed to pass the two McLaren’s with Lando Norris finishing tenth fourteen seconds ahead of teammate Daniel Ricciardo, finishing in ninth. From then on cars were in team formation and two laps down, Lance Stroll finishing ahead of Sebastian Vettel.

Antonio Giovinazzi dropping down the order late in the race thanks to a late puncher to finish ahead of Robert Kubica. Nicolas Latifi finishing ahead of his teammate George Russell, despite the Englishman retiring on two laps down late in the race he remained ahead of Mick Schumacher who he had already lapped.

The two retirements were Yuki Tsunoda because of a loss of power and Nikita Mazepin with a hydraulics issue. Schumacher and Mazepin nearly having a collision on the opening lap of the race.

Related

Dutch GP – Qualifying Result

DUTCH GP – Max Verstappen Beats Lewis Hamilton To Pole By Three-Hundredths

DUTCH GP – Charles Leclerc leads Ferrari one-two in second practice as Lewis Hamilton suffers loss of power

DUTCH GP – Lewis Hamilton Fastest By Nine Hundredths In A Heavily Disrupted First Practice Session

F1 Today – Dutch Prixview – 02/09/2021

PRIXVIEW – Dutch Grand Prix

Max Verstappen put in a dominant performance to claim his seventh win of the season at the Dutch Grand Prix twenty seconds ahead of his championship rival Lewis Hamilton.
