The Englishman set a 15.5 using the hypersoft tyres to go a tenth faster than yesterdays fastest time, and seven-hundredths of a second faster than Kimi Raikkonen.

The Ferrari driver set the pace during the morning before Russell went faster. The former champion then narrowed the gap to seven-hundredths of a second, the two traded times for much of the day. Soon both drivers were over half a second faster than Sebastian Vettel’s fastest lap in FP3.

Red Bull’s Jake Dennis was third fastest on his second day of testing. The top three teams spent most of the day gathering much-needed data, completing over a hundred laps each. The data the teams have from the cars will help with the teams’ development programme going into the second half of the season.

Antonio Giovinazzi switched from Ferrari to Sauber for day two, as the Swiss team could give him a seat for 2019. The Italian set his fastest lap in the afternoon moving to fourth, but his time was almost two seconds off what he managed on Tuesday.

Force India’s Nikita Mazepin was fifth, however, the Russian completed the least laps of anyone and stopped on track during the morning and afternoon. He returned to the track with an 18.7, before stopping after the final corner with a small amount of smoke coming from the rear of his car.

However, on both occasions, the Russian was able to get going again.

Williams reserve driver Robert Kubica had run as high as second during the morning. However, the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix winner slipped to sixth.

The polish driver’s day was spent gathering data for the team, they were collecting data on the new ‘simplified’ front wing. Kubica fastest time from his hundred and three laps run an 18.4, putting him fractionally faster than Lando Norris’s McLaren.

After crashing out of yesterday’s tyre test, Sean Gelael was back in the Toro Rosso for the teams own test programme. He was over half a second faster than teammates Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley.

The teams’ race drivers shared duties for Pirelli, the Frenchman was the faster of the two with a 19.7, Hartley was four tenths off the pace of his teammate.

Teams now officially head off on their summer break before the Belgian Grand Prix at the end of the month. But the teams will look to learn and understand the data from the cars, as they bring upgrades for the second half of the season.

Mercedes junior driver George Russell was fastest on the second day of testing at the Hungaroring.
