The Australian has been keen to wait until Mercedes decide on there line up, however, it has been hinted that the German team are to retain both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas for next season.

Red Bull have indicated they have wanted to keep Ricciardo long term, however, he has been keen to close the pay gap between himself and his younger teammate Max Verstappen who signed a ‘mega deal’ last year.

Speaking on Wednesday, the team’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko both declared that a new deal is “getting closer”. Ricciardo said: “It’s not over yet but it will come. Soon. The time is not far away.”

Talks were held between the two before they appeared at a promotional event on Wednesday afternoon. Marko also used the same description Mercedes has given of Hamilton’s long-running contract saga, saying it was “just details” that needed to be clarified.

With the deal in place, that will allow Carlos Sainz Jr to be released from his Red Bull contract and allow him to sign a deal long term with Renault.

Marko also says that he knows that Ricciardo did not receive offers from Mercedes or Ferrari, the only teams offering were McLaren and Renault who he says are too far behind Red Bull in terms of competitiveness.

He added “Mercedes and Ferrari have a number one driver who is clearly declared. I know Ricciardo did not receive an offer from Ferrari. Renault will, as far as I know, stay with the current drivers.”

“Above all, I don’t think Renault is playing in the budget regions that Ricciardo has in mind. Daniel is in a situation where he has no sporting alternative to us. He probably imagined it differently.”

Raikkonen has “zero interest” in McLaren

Kimi Raikkonen says he has “zero interest” in the “nonsense” about his future in Formula One, after reports suggesting that McLaren could be interested in re-signing him.

According to Motorsport.com, Ferrari is interested and are leaning to signing Charles Leclerc to drive alongside Sebastian Vettel next season. That could mean the end of his F1 career, but asked about the interest from McLaren he says he was still intended to see out his career with Ferrari.

He said “I don’t know really, I said in 2007 I wanted to finish with Ferrari and at some point, it didn’t look like that – now it looks like that again. You never know what comes after this and that. We’ll see. As always, a lot of talk, and I’m not really happy to comment.”

Pressed on whether he or any of his representatives had spoken to McLaren, Raikkonen said: “I spoke to them for sure, but in the past a lot when I used to be there. Like I said I have zero interest to get involved in all the nonsense in my view.”

Raikkonen won nine races for McLaren between 2002-2006, before joining McLaren. McLaren is looking at possible replacements for Fernando Alonso, should the Spaniard retire. But they are also after Daniel Ricciardo, who is believed to be close to a deal with Red Bull.

Today, Ricciardo reiterated his desire to sign a new contract by the summer break but would not comment on the suggestion he is seeking the same financial terms as teammate Max Verstappen.

Vettel not worried by mistakes

Sebastian Vettel insists he is “not worried” by the number of errors he has made this season but has admitted that the driver who makes the least mistakes is likely to win the championship.

The German lost the lead of the championship in France on Sunday, following a mistake at the first corner relegated to him to the back of the field and a fifth-place finish. Vettel also made another costly mistake in Baku trying to overtake Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas.

Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, Vettel remained defiant, saying “I’m not worried. I don’t think there’s something fundamentally wrong. I think it’s racing. There’s some errors that you shouldn’t do, some errors that happen – it depends on the type of error. I’ve had a lot of races, it happens – unfortunately, it can, but I try to minimise it.”

Vettel’s error has, however, cost him his lead in the championship, he now has a fourteen point deficit in the championship but says he will not tone down his attacking instincts.

“It’s a long way and I think it’s normal that some things happen along the way,” said Vettel.

“Obviously you’re also trying to push the limits. It didn’t cross my mind when I was in Baku to just stay behind, surrender and let the other person past and collect some points.

Magnussen a stand out performer

Haas’s team principal Guenther Steiner believes that this season has been Kevin Magnussen to show his true racing talent. The Dane has been one of the stand out performers this season scoring all of the team’s points.

The Danish driver has comprehensively out-performed Romain Grosjean so far this season after finishing behind the Frenchman in their first year together.

Asked by ESPN, if had an explanation for why Magnussen’s performances have been so good, Steiner said: “I think it’s just the confidence. I personally think he’s in a good spot with his thinking, with his driving, everything.”

“He’s confident, he knows the team, he has nothing to worry there, he doesn’t think about it, he trusts everybody, he’s got a good car available.” The McLaren junior was dropped by the team in favour of Fernand Alonso after his debut season, before joining Renault in 2016.

Magnussen then joined Haas the from Renault, Steiner believes that Haas can allow Magnussen to show the pace which got him on to the McLaren programme in the first place.

“I think it’s the first time that in F1 he can show how good a driver he is. I think he showed it when he drove in F3 and all the minor series how good he is. I think it’s the first time he had a real chance with a good car, or a decent car, to show what he can do and that’s what it is.”

Asked about 2019 contracts, both Magnussen and Grosjean are out of contract, Steiner has made it clear that contract negotiations will not start until after the summer break because of the busy race schedule.

Pirelli nominates Monza tyres

Pirelli has announced the tyres that it will bring to Septembers Italian Grand Prix. For the race at Monza, it has nominated the Supersofts, Softs and Medium tyres.

Each driver must save one set of the softest of the three nominated compounds for Q3. This set will then be returned for those who qualify in the top 10, but the remaining drivers will keep it for the race.

Each driver must have both these sets available for the race. Teams are free to choose the remaining 10 sets, making 13 sets in total for the weekend.

The Weekend Ahead

This weekend the second leg of the triple header sees F1 head to Austria and the Red Bull Ring. Throughout the last fiftyish years since it was built this circuit is one which rewards good speed and downforce, there four suiting Mercedes.

The second and third races of this tripleheader, I believe will be harder for the teams and drivers mentally as they have not had much recovery time. This period is very important as we have seen in the past the four races in July act as the starting point towards the title.

Red Bull I think will again struggle at there own circuit, because this circuit is high speed and needs straight line speed. Red Bull jokingly said they need more corners to win their own race, but they know that.

I believe going towards Silverstone next week, we may get news/hints about the future of Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo. I think however the main priority at the moment for all the drivers and teams will be focusing on the triple and doubleheader.

The race is fast and overtaking is possible, but we have seen the race dominated in recent years by Mercedes and the cars starting on the front row.

Formula One Vault will bring you LIVE and full coverage of the Austrian Grand Prix from 09:45 UKT on Friday with first practice on our LIVE Twitter account @F1VaultLive.
