The Australian was half a second faster than his team-mate Max Verstappen, with Mercedes Lewis Hamilton third.

The Red Bull drivers traded fastest laps in the early part of the evening’s session, but when Verstappen went to try to close the gap he brushed the wall. Ricciardo’s also appear to look strong on his race pace as well. Singapore was expected to bring Red bull into play because of the low speed nature of the circuit and both Ricciardo and Verstappen look strong.

Mercedes knew going into this weekend that they would be on the back foot, but Hamilton was a lot closer than expected and more importantly ahead of Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas was fourth fastest.

Vettel while showing he was strong in the early part of his fast laps, was caught in traffic and then was forced to abort his next run thanks to a virtual safety car. He then chose to run the rest of the session on prime tyres.

That was before he side-swiped the barriers at Turn 10, although he was able to complete the heavy-fuel race runs as planned. Vettel had settle for eleventh fastest.

Hours after announcing their spilt with Honda, both McLaren’s proved while they lack the power they are not bad with their chassis, with Stoffel Vandoorne sixth and Fernando Alonso seventh. That put them ahead of the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen.

The Finn spilt the Force India’s of Sergio Perez in eighth and Esteban Ocon in tenth.

It was a difficult evening for Carlos Sainz, who struggled with understeer but he still managed to go four tenths faster than his Toro Rosso team-mate Daniil Kvyat.

Through-out the session Williams Lance Stroll ran close to the barriers before finishing sixteenth.

Related

McLaren switches to Renault power for 2018, as they split with Honda

SINGAPORE GP – Ricciardo sets the pace in first practice breaking the lap record going a tenth faster than Vettel

Preview – Singapore Grand Prix

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo once again topped the times in the second practice session for this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix.
