It was a close fight between the Ferrari’s and Mercedes as they fought for victory, with both trying to switch their drivers to take the victory.

The two Ferrari’s managed to withstand the pressure placed on them by the Mercedes who switched Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton around to try and get past Raikkonen.

Vettel’s win means he extends his lead over Hamilton to fourteen points going into the summer break.

That released the Brit to try to attack the Finn in the Ferrari but he failed to make the move so Mercedes honoured their promise to allow Bottas past if he failed to pass Raikkonen.

Hamilton was unable to make the move on Räikkönen. The British driver looked immediately unfurled sufficient had enough pace to catch the Ferrari train but not enough to overtake Raikkonen.

Vettel said “I am over the moon. It was a really difficult race. I had my hands full from three to four laps after the safety car, the steering started to go sideways and it started to get worse. It wasn’t easy but it didn’t do a favour to Kimi who could obviously go faster.

“You go down the straight and it’s not straight. In right-handers it was OK, but in left-handers you had to go further than your head is telling you should.”

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was fifth despite collision with his teammate Daniel Ricciardo at Turn Two on the opening lap.

The Australian passed his Dutch teammate on the outside after he suffered oversteer causing them to crash. That earnt Verstappen a ten-second penalty at his first stop. Ricciardio said “I mean there’s not much else to describe or say. That was amateur to say the least.”

“It’s not like he was trying to pass, there was no room. I don’t think he likes when a team mate gets ahead of him. He had the whole race to repair the mistake.”

Verstappen told Sky Sports “The start was actually quite good but then we were both fighting for position into turn two. I had a car in front of me and I locked up and then I was a passenger.

“It was never my intention to hit anyone and especially my team-mate, who I have a good relationship with. I apologise to Daniel and I will speak to him in private. We will sort it out.”

Fernando Alonso put in a strong performance to finish sixth, after passing his fellow Spaniard Carlos Sainz during a pit stop. Earlier in the race the two banged wheels at the start. The Force India’s Sergio Perez was eighth ahead of his team-mate Esteban Ocon.

Stoffel Vandoorne scored a point in tenth, that gives McLaren another double points score.

Hass’s Romain Grosjean made contact as well at the start with Nico Hulkenberg and Marcus Ericsson. He came in for his pit stop on lap twenty but was forced to pull over and retire as wheel nut was cross-threaded at his pit stop.

Paul di Resta’s return to the driving seat ended with him retiring from the race because of an oil leak in the closing stages as he battled with the Sauber.

Jolyon Palmer was twelve and his Renault team-mate Nico Hulkenberg was classified seventeenth but retired from the race. The French team had targeted this race as a place where they could have taken a decent haul of points.

Going into the weekend, Renault had deemed “critical” to their ambition of finishing fifth.

RELATED

NOTEBOOK – Hungarian Qualifying

Hungarian GP – Qualifying Result

HUNGARIAN GP – Vettel takes pole by a tenth to head a Ferrari one two, as Di Resta returns

HUNGARIAN GP – Di Resta replaces Massa for the rest of the weekend

NOTEBOOK – HUNGARIAN PRACTICE

HUNGARIAN GP – Ricciardo tops the times once again by a tenth over Vettel in second practice

HUNGARIAN GP – Ricciardo fastest in first practice by two-tenths over Raikkonen

PREVIEW – Hungarian Grand Prix

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel has beaten his teammate Kimi Raikkonen to take victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix.
