The Englishman drove the perfect race in mixed conditions to secure a Silverstone victory and the twenty-fifth home win for a British driver.

Norris took victory effectively at half distance when Piastri was handed a ten-second time penalty for erratic driving at the restart, when the stewards decided he slowed down too much, allowing Max Verstappen to overtake. Verstappen then spun as the race restarted, dropping to tenth.

Piastri until he was given the penalty for the final restart, through the rain, safety cars and collisions had led most of the race, before serving the penalty at his final stop, which allowed Norris to take the win. Norris then was able to secure back-to-back wins for the first time in the same season and cut his teammates lead to eight points at the halfway stage of the season.

Piastri then tried to fight back and convince the team to use team orders to revert what he saw as an ‘unfair’ penalty, suggesting, “if you don’t think if it was fair, we should swap back and just race”, McLaren chose to leave the order as was and Norris then managed to add to his lead to capture his first British Grand Prix win.

Verstappen appeared to have been distracted by what had happened a few seconds before in the incident that earned Piastri his penalty. The incident was similar to Montreal when Red Bull failed to get a penalty for George Russell.

The stewards decided Piastri had contravened a regulation that demands drivers “proceed at a pace which involved no erratic braking nor any other manoeuvre which is likely to endanger other drivers from the point at which the lights on the safety car are turned off”.

Nico Hulkenberg ended a fifteen-year wait for his first podium of his career and Sauber’s first podium since October 2012. Hulkenberg had worked his way up from nineteenth to hold off nine-time Silverstone winner Lewis Hamilton, finishing five seconds ahead and set a record for most Grands Prix without a podium.

Norris who won his home grand prix for the first time: “It’s beautiful. Everything I dreamed of, I guess. Everything I’ve ever wanted to achieve. Apart from a championship, I think this is as good as it gets in terms of feelings and in terms of achievement, being proud, all of it.

“This is where it all started for me, I was actually watching you [Jenson Button] on TV many years ago, and now thankfully I’ve been able to have my go. Incredible race, stressful as always, but the support from the fans, it made the difference today, so I’ve got to thank them for it all.

Piastri said “I’m not going to say much. I’ll get myself in trouble. Well done to Nico. I think that’s the highlight of the day. Apparently, you can’t brake behind the Safety Car any more. I did it for five laps before that. I’m not going to say much because I’ll get myself in trouble. I still like Silverstone, even if I don’t like it today…”

Hulkenberg, who claims his first career podium at Silverstone: “It has been a long time coming, hasn’t it? I always knew we have it in us, I have it in me somewhere. What a race, coming from virtually last, doing it all over again from last weekend, it’s pretty surreal to be honest. Not sure how it all happened, but obviously crazy conditions, mixed conditions. It was a survival fight for a lot of the race.”

Norris’s victory has seen him cut his teammate’s championship lead to eight points while McLaren has increased their advantage over Ferrari in the constructors’ championship to 238 points, with twelve races to go as the season reached its halfway point.

Hamilton ended his twelve years of podium finishes at Silverstone as he continues his wait for his first Grand Prix podium at Ferrari, the Englishman finishing sixteen seconds ahead of Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver appeared to struggle to fight after he took the wrong approach to setup going for a low downforce set-up on Saturday, which made him unable to fight for victory.

Verstappen finished the race nearly a minute off race winner Norris in fifth and three seconds ahead of former teammate Pierre Gasly. The four-time champion, despite his struggles throughout the race including a spin at Vale (Turn Sixteen), drove a solid race to pass both Williams, Lance Stroll and Gasly to finish fifth.

Gasly was three seconds ahead of Lance Stroll who finished the race a minute off the race winner Norris. Stroll had at one stage benefited from an early switch back to soft tyres, but then lost out through the two safety cars and increasing rain, making it difficult for him to hold onto third and soon tumbled down the order.

Alex Albon was eighth, finishing just under two seconds ahead of a frustrated Fernando Alonso, the Aston Martin driver believes the team lost out because of strategy during the mixed conditions in the first half of the race. Alonso believed the team pitted him too early which cost him positions. George Russell finished the race four seconds behind Alonso after making the same mistake.

Ollie Bearman was the only British driver outside the points as the Haas driver finished just under a second and a half behind Russell, with Carlos Sainz splitting the Haas’s after finishing seven tenths ahead of Esteban Ocon. Both Haas drivers had made contact in the closing stages but both managed to finish, though the incident is under investigation.

Charles Leclerc had a difficult afternoon finishing seven seconds behind Ocon, while Yuki Tsunoda was the only other finisher but a lap down in fifteenth.

The retirements were Kimi Antonelli, Isack Hadjar, Gabriel Bortoleto, Liam Lawson and Franco Colapinto.

Related

British GP – Qualifying Result

BRITISH GP – Max Verstappen comes from nowhere to take pole a tenth ahead of Oscar Piastri

BRITISH GP – Charles Leclerc fastest by seven hundredths in third practice

Lando Norris has won a chaotic, dramatic, rain-affected British Grand Prix for the first time in his career after finishing six seconds ahead of McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri.
