Imola could be hosting its final Grand Prix having returned to the calendar during Covid having been brought in as a replacement race in 2020, following a fifteen-year hiatus.

Originally the San Marino Grand Prix between 1981 and 2006, Imola has a special place because of the great races we have seen over the years. Imola is an old-school circuit which requires risk with rewards, there is no modern tarmac runoff on this narrow old-school circuit.

The Imola circuit remains one driver’s love and is one of the few circuits which is designed to run anticlockwise. This places extra pressure on the drivers’ necks and bodies because most circuits are clockwise, it speeds and downforce. One of the most feared corners and seen of Senna’s death in 1994 is Tamburello, with Roland Ratzenberger also being killed in qualifying.

Traditionally the opening race of the European season, Imola held its first Grand Prix as a non-championship race in 1963 won by Jim Clark and a second in 1979 won by Niki Lauda. The circuit held the 1980 Italian Grand Prix while Monza was closed for modernisation before joining as the San Marino Grand Prix until 2006, and Emilia Romagna during covid.

Imola is a unique classic on the calendar, with this season expected to be the last for the foreseeable future having intended to be a one-off during Covid it has lasted longer than expected. There are no massive tarmac runoff areas, lined by grass and gravel mistakes can lead to safety cars and red flags during qualifying.

While it’s known by its former name Imola as the town the circuit is in, since 1988 it has been named Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari. Named after both Enzo and his son Alfredo but known as Dino, a car designer in F2 who died aged twenty-four from Duchenne muscular dystrophy in 1956.

The second Grand Prix, a non-championship race, held at Imola was called ‘Dino Ferrari Grand Prix’ originally the plan was to alternate with Monza but both circuits would be on the calendar between 1981-2006 and from 2020 the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. The race was won by Niki Lauda his final win before famously ‘quitting’ the sport two weeks later walking out during practice in Montreal.

One of the most politically controversial races took place in 1982, at the height of the FISA-FOCA War and following the GPDA strike in Kyalami teams boycotted the race in protest over Brabham’s disqualification in Rio. Ferrari dominated their home race Didier Pironi finishing three-tenths ahead of teammate Gilles Villeneuve.

However, there was more controversy around team orders when Ferrari ordered both drivers to slow down, with Michele Alboreto far behind. Villeneuve interpreted this as an order to maintain position on the track; Pironi did not and thus overtook Villeneuve on the final lap, infuriating the Canadian to the point that he vowed never to speak to Pironi again. Villeneuve would be killed after crashing at Zolder during qualifying two weeks later.

1983 saw Ferrari win again, with Patrick Tambay taking top honours and Riccardo Patrese crashing his Brabham hard at Acquaminerale while battling with Tambay for the lead. 1984 saw Prost win in a McLaren, and 1985 was yet another exciting race. Ayrton Senna led much of the race after starting fifteenth Stefan Johnson made his way up to second with two laps to go, but after passing senna retired on the last lap after

Elio de Angelis and Riccardo Patrese both won the San Marino Grand Prix in 1985 and 1990 respectively, so they won on home soil but not in Monza the last Italians to

win a Grand Prix in Italy. Gerhard Berger crashed heavily at Tamburello in 1989. He survived and the race was defined by another battle between Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

Events of 1994 would define Imola’s place F1 history, it all began in Q1 on Friday, Rubens Barichello crashed heavily, himself into the barrier and was knocked unconscious by an impact measured at 95g, but escaped a sprained wrist and broken nose.

Saturday’s qualifying session saw Ratzenberger killed after a front wing failure, the wing broke off going under the car and that forced the front wheel to penetrate the cockpit. The Austrian suffered several fatal injuries. Senna took pole, despite sitting out the remained of the session.

On the second start, Senna led away, then on lap seven the Brazilians car went off at Tamburello and he crashed at high speed and was killed instantly. Schumacher’s first win at Imola palled off as just a footnote in history as the death of Senna. The second time in the sports history that two drivers have been killed at the same race

Damon Hill won for a second time in 1997 followed by David Coulthard in 1998, Ferrari’s dominance started in 1999 and would see Michael win five of the next seven races. With him only being beaten by brother Ralf in 2001, the first time a pair of brothers had won races in F1.

Between 1999 and 2004 the race was dominated by the Schumacher brothers, with Michael winning four of the five races as Ferrari dominated the early 2000s while his brother Ralf would win for Williams in 2001. Jenson Button would take a surprise pole in 2004 before finishing behind Schumacher in the race.

The final ‘San Marino’ races were defined by battles between Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. 2005 was won by Alonso; and in 2006 Schumacher won for the seventh time, while Japanese driver Yuji Ide caused an accident, which flipped the car of Dutchman Christijan Albers, which cost him his FIA super license.

The race returned to the calendar originally as a one-off during the Covid pandemic in 2020. The renamed Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was first held in November before returning to its traditional April / May date the following season as the opening race of the European season.

Lewis Hamilton won the race in 2020, the closing race of the European season. While Hamilton teammate Valtteri Bottas led the early phases and fought with Max Verstappen, the cooler November conditions brought rain and Hamilton took control of the race just before the quarter-distance mark.

Mercedes then controlled the remainder of the race sealing both the drivers and constructors’ championships for the seventh consecutive World Constructors’ Championships, setting a new record. However, the drivers’ championship wasn’t decided until the following race in Istanbul.

Five months later the race returned to the traditional European opener, Hamilton again starting on pole but Lando Norris lost the first front row of his career. However, he lost his front-row start after breaching track limits at Rivazza dropping him to seventh.

Verstappen went on to win the race after blotting past teammate Perez and diving past Hamilton at Tamburello on the opening lap. Conditions were tricky with Mercedes being caught up in drama with Hamilton, reserve driver George Russell and Bottas, the first saw Hamilton run wide trying at Tosa.

But the race was defined by the dramatic crash through Tamburello between Russell and Bottas. The 200mph crash brought out the red flag as Russell marched over to the remains of Bottas’ Mercedes to confront him, while Bottas replied to a light slap on his crash helmet from Russell by giving him the middle finger.

2022 saw Verstappen beat Charles Leclerc to the sprint pole before taking victory in the sprint to secure GP pole after passing then holding off Leclerc to take the win. While teammate Sergio Perez made p four places from where he started on the grid. The Mexican in the closing stages managed to close like lightning followed by the second Ferrari of Carlos Sainz to go behind their two teammates, Perez in the closing stages being a second and seven-tenths behind Leclerc.

Race & Circuit Guide

Round

07 of 24

Race

Formula 1 AWS Gran Premio del Made In Italy e Dell Emilia Romagna 2025

Venue

Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, Imola, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Configuration

2008 Grand Prix

Circuit Length

4.909 km (3.050 mi)

Laps

63

Race Distance

309.049 km (192.034 mi

Lap Record

Race

01:15.484, (Sir Lewis Hamilton, 2020, F1, Mercedes)

Outright

01:14.411 (Sir Lewis Hamilton, 2021, F1, Mercedes)

Most wins drivers

Michael Schumacher (7)

Most wins manufacture

Ferrari (8)

Williams

Wins at Imola across Italian/San Marino/Emilia-Romagna GPs

Fast facts

The death of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna in 1994 tends to overshadow all other conversations about this race and circuit, one aspect of which is how magisterial Senna was around the fast, narrow track.

Senna holds two records at Imola. Sergio Perez was fourth seven thousandths faster than teammate Max Verstappen. But the three-time champion at stages looked unsettled in the RB20, complaining about a lack of grip in the middle sector.

FP2 Leclerc continued to set the pace eight hundredths faster than in the earlier session, as he was almost two-tenths faster than Oscar Piastri. Yuki Tsunoda was third for RB ahead of the team’s home race he was almost two-tenths behind the McLaren. The Japanese driver a hundredth ahead of the two Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton going a hundredth and a half faster than teammate George Russell.

FP3 saw Piastri lead a McLaren one-two with a 15.529 on soft tyres going three-tenths faster than teammate Lando Norris. The fastest times came at the end of the session in a scramble to get out on the softs after Perez crashed with under ten minutes to go. Sainz was third almost a tenth and a half faster than his former teammate while Charles Leclerc was two hundredths behind.

Qualifying saw Verstappen back in front he set a 14.746 to take his eighth consecutive poles, matching Ayrton Senna’s record on the thirtieth anniversary of his death, and of Roland Ratzenberger. Verstappen was faster than Oscar Piastri who beat his teammate Norris by nearly two hundredths, in one of the most competitive sessions of the season.

Verstappen held off Lando Norris in a thrilling fight to win by seven-tenths of a second. The Dutchman held Norris off from the start but as the race progressed it became clear that Red Bull were not able to pull away by as much as he would normally do. But Norris was not able to close the gap enough in the closing stages to try and get the move done to take the victory.

Leclerc was third seven seconds behind Norris returning Ferrari to the podium for the first time at Imola since 2006. These can transform teams’ seasons as we saw last year with McLaren, there have been rumours that Red Bull has understood their issues and could bring solutions which could make them championship contenders.

Lando Norris will be hoping that his second win in Miami, will like it did last season in a way give him a boost given a difficult few races while Oscar Piastri, who is going into one of his four home races, as he has Italian heritage and the last Italian to win in Italy was at Imola in 1990.

But we don’t know until we see what other teams have brought, and I think given the performance we have seen is in the group behind McLaren, though not that far behind it has changed race to race. There appear not to be a consistent challenger yet and while Ferrari and Red Bull took one win each, on the whole, they have not yet shown the consistency.

Red Bull will be hoping they can bring upgrades to the car which can bring them into the fight with McLaren, but I believe that they have continued that slide we saw after Adrian Newey’s departure about a year ago. However, if anything they need to start moving on as it is now a year since his departure and we need to see if they can move on.

Kimi Antonelli goes into his home Grand Prix having taken his maiden pole for the sprint in Miami, he did finish on the podium in the 2023 FREC race here and fourth in last season’s F2 feature race. I have been reading there is this feeling that he has started to make progress after a shaky debut in Melbourne.

As we know, Imola is an old fast-flowing circuit which makes it more difficult to overtake but it is possible. This circuit requires speed and downforce in the corners, as we know we have seen plenty of overtaking in recent years, but strategy is key and has played an important role this season.

I feel a team to watch given this is a major point for upgrades is Haas as we know during the season they tend to slip away, but they didn’t last season to the extent we have seen during their decade in the sport

2022 vs 2024 Race Data

P1 Fastest

P2 Fastest

P3 Fastest

Q1 Fastest

Q2 Fastest

Q3 Fastest

Sprint time

Sprint
Fastest Lap

Race Time

Fastest Lap

2024

01:16.990

01:15.906

01:15.529

01:15.762

01:15.176

01:14.746

01:25:25.252

01:18.589

Diff

-13.570

-03.551

-03.034

-03.617

-13.253

-07:18.716

+00.146

2022

01:29.420

01:19.457

N/A

01:18.796

01:18.793

01:27.999

30:39.567

01:19.019

01:32:07.968

01:18.446

2024 Lap time comparison

FP1

FP2

FP3

Q1

Q2

Q3

Race

Team

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Race.
