The Englishman will not need to serve a period of gardening leave when he leaves next year, leaving him free to join another team to help design their 2026 car.

Several teams have been linked with moves for Newey with Ferrari – who have seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton joining them in 2025 – appearing favourites to sign him. Newey will immediately step back from his F1 design duties to “focus on final development and delivery of Red Bull’s first hypercar, the hugely anticipated RB17”.

The current champions have been engulfed in an off-track scandal and civil war since allegations of inappropriate and controlling behaviour were made against CEO and team principal Christian Horner.

The grievance against Horner, who has always denied the claims, was dismissed on February 28. The woman who brought the complaint has since appealed the outcome.

Following the allegations against Horner, a perceived power struggle at Red Bull has been playing out with Horner coming under heavy pressure after his star driver’s father, Jos Verstappen, called for the team principal to leave. The series of events are understood to have further disillusioned Newey.

However, while his relationship with Horner has cooled, the pair are still due to fly to this weekend’s Miami GP together, with Newey to still attend other select Grands Prix in the 2024 season.

Newey’s departure could, according to reports, trigger an exit clause in Max Verstappen’s contract, the Dutchman has refused to give support to Horner. while his father Jos has called for Horner to resign

Horner said the 65-year-old leaves the team as a “true legend”.

Newey said: “Ever since I was a young boy, I wanted to be a designer of fast cars. My dream was to be an engineer in Formula 1, and I’ve been lucky enough to make that dream a reality.”

“For almost two decades it has been my great honour to have played a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progress from upstart newcomer to multiple title-winning team. I feel now is an opportune moment to hand that baton over to others and to seek new challenges for myself.”

Newey has reportedly been persuaded to oversee a transitional period and complete a hypercar as part of his deal not to be placed on gardening leave, which allows him to join a new team immediately in March 2025.

In his forty-year career, he has so far won twelve Constructors’ Championships with three different Formula One teams, and with seven different drivers winning thirteen Drivers’ Championships driving Newey’s designs.

Newey has heavily been linked to joining Ferrari forming a dream team with Lewis Hamilton ahead of the 2026 regulation change. On Tuesday, according to Italian media a meeting took place between Newey and Ferrari’s general manager and team principal Fred Vasseur.

Newey has been at Red Bull since 2005 and has overseen two dominant eras with the team – from 2010-14 when they won four consecutive drivers’ and constructors’ titles with Sebastian Vettel, and the current era with Max Verstappen.

Last year, Verstappen and Red Bull produced the most dominant season in F1 history, the Dutchman winning 19 of the 22 races and the team all but one. They look on course for a similar performance after winning four of the first five races this season.

Newey previously had multiple championship-winning successes at both Williams and McLaren. Newey in his forty-year career has worked for Haas-Lola, March, Williams McLaren and for the last twenty years Red Bull. He

However, thirty years ago today was perhaps the lowest point in his career, the death of Ayrton Senna at Imola. He was acquitted of manslaughter in 2005 over the death of Senna by the Italian Supreme Court.

He was awarded an OBE in the 2012 New Year Honours for services to motorsport.

There is confidence at Red Bull that they have prepared for Newey’s departure by evolving their technical operations and ensuring the department isn’t, in Horner’s words, completely “reliant” on its leader.

Pierre Wache had taken over the day-to-day role of technical director, he had been linked with a move to Ferrari himself last year, signed a contract extension with Red Bull in February and appears to be Newey’s likely successor as chief technical officer.

Newey has since 2022 overseen an unprecedented period of dominance, Max Verstappen at the last race in Shanghai took his twenty-first win in twenty-three races.

Red Bull has announced that chief technical officer Adrian Newey will leave the team by the end of March 2025.
