The 3.6-mile circuit is one of few and the only figure of eight circuits in the world making it challenging for drivers as well as its old school nature makes it one of the more demanding circuits.

This weekend, though the actual date is in October, marks ten years since the accident which killed Jules Bianchi, and under a month until the thirty anniversary at Imola of the deaths of Ronald Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna. But it’s still a circuit loved by drivers.

At the Dunlop Curve, Jules Bianchi slid into the gravel trap and collided with a recovery vehicle that was already tending to another stranded car which had gone off the lap beforehand. This left Bianchi with severe head injuries from which he would never recover and he passed away on 17 July 2015, aged just 25.

It’s similar to Zandvoort which was also designed by Hans Hugenholtz it shares many of the same characteristics, a mix of a high-speed straight, fast sweeping corners and more technical sections. The old-school circuit owned by Honda was originally designed as a test track, with only one slow corner; without the Casio chicane, some cars would go through the final long right-hand corner flat out and then would go past the pits at more than 200 mph (320 km/h).

The circuit is one which drivers love as it’s an old-school circuit which punishes mistakes and where there is difficulty through the twisting corners for drivers to overtake. It’s a tricky circuit which requires drivers who can attack the circuit, and push themselves to the limits. But mistakes are costly as the barriers are close and not as many run-off areas as at modern circuits.

Drivers have been a little bit concerned that having this as the fourth race of the season that the stresses the figure of eight circuit. Suzuka is one of the most challenging circuits both physically and mentally, there is also little room for error as this is a circuit where costly mistakes can happen.

This means that some flexibility is needed with strategy, also mistakes can happen and that can lead to safety cars, red flags etc as we don’t have the huge tarmac run off and the grass and gravel. That means it could be a very interesting weekend as we are early on in the season to come to a physically demanding circuit meaning the drivers have no time to build physical fitness.

The weather at this time of year is expected to be colder which may create issues with tyre warm up and we are in spring time so there are different challenges which teams have faced since the 1994 Pacific Grand Prix in Aida.

Like six months ago, Red Bull goes into this weekend having had the record-equalling run of wins coming to an end in Melbourne a fortnight ago. Suzuka tends to favour the teams with dominant cars and drivers we have seen classic and controversial title fights Prost-Senna in 1989 to 1991.

The late 1980s and early 1990s would be defined by feuding McLaren teammates Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna. The height of the rivalry was the 1990 title decider, Senna felt that pole was on the dirty side, he didn’t yield and move over for the Frenchman with them both crashing out at Turn One. That gave him his second title by default.

That followed on from a crash the previous season at the final chicane, which handed Prost the title. Senna was off the racing line and it would be more difficult for him to make a better start. Frustrated and angry, Senna mimicked Prost’s statement of the previous year saying he would not move over if Prost attempted to overtake in the first corner.

This weekend marks the first running of a Grand Prix in Japan in April for thirty years, with the country holding the Pacific Grand Prix at Okayama International Circuit won by Michael Schumacher on his way to both his first world titles.

1998 saw another dramatic title decider between Schumacher and Finn Mika Häkkinen. The two drivers had duelled all season long and Häkkinen led Schumacher by four points heading into the final race at Suzuka. Schumacher started on pole for the race but stalled on the grid, giving Häkkinen in second a clear track in front of him for the start.

The beginning of the 2000s saw dominance by Schumacher and Ferrari, the German winning four out of five races. But 2003 was probably the most challenging, given the difficulties overtaking. Schumacher needed to come at least eighth, he started at fourteenth on the grid but managed to secure the point he needed to take his sixth World Drivers’ Championship, beating the record held by Juan Manuel Fangio. His race also nearly ended in a collision with Takuma Sato and his brother Ralf.

2004 saw the first of three qualifying sessions at Suzuka run on Sunday due to bad weather, but it was another race where Schumacher took victory in his all-concurring Ferrari.

Kimi Raikkonen won from seventeenth in 2005 after overtaking Giancarlo Fisichella at the beginning of the last lap, after Fisichella was blocked by a backmarker. In 2008, Michael Schumacher led until an engine failure virtually ended his chances of an eighth championship, which went to Spaniard Fernando Alonso.

The 2007 and 2008 races saw a brief return to Fuji, Lewis Hamilton took victory in torrential rain after Alonso crashed out allowing Heikki Kovalainen to finish second ahead of Raikkonen, the first time that two Finnish drivers were together on the podium. In 2008, the first corner brought trouble for both the title-contending McLarens and Ferraris, and Alonso was able to take the victory in a Renault. Hamilton finished out the points while title rival Felipe Massa only finished seventh.

2009 saw the race return to a redesigned Suzuka in what was intended to be a bi-annual deal with Fuji but that deal collapsed amidst the financial crisis. Until 2019 and for the foreseeable future the rebuilt circuit. The 2009 and 2010 races were won by Sebastian Vettel.

The Red Bull driver took his second title with third in 2011, with Jenson Button (the only driver in the field who had a theoretical chance of beating Vettel to the title) winning the race wearing a special tribute helmet to the people affected by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, and the Fukushima disaster.

Kamui Kobayashi finished third the following year, holding off Button and became the first Japanese driver to finish on the podium in Suzuka since Aguri Suzuki in 1990. The 2013 race was won by Vettel for Red Bull, marking his fourth consecutive victory of the season as well as his fourth victory overall at Suzuka. Vettel’s teammate Mark Webber, who started the race on pole position, finished second behind his teammate, with Romain Grosjean taking the final podium position for Lotus.

2014 saw Hamilton take victory but was defined by the fatal accident of Jules Bianchi, in the closing stage Adrian Sutil spun off at Dunlop, as the crane came onto recover the Sauber. However Bianchi also spun in the same place and crashed into the crane, the race was then abandoned and the Frenchman died the following July, the first driver to be killed since Roland Ratzeberger and Senna at Imola in 1994.

That year saw the start of Mercedes’s domination, with six back-to-back wins before the pandemic. Four of them by Hamilton. In 2015, the Englishman won the race, having overtaken Rosberg at the start, who fell back to fourth but recovered to finish second. Rosberg’s deficit in the Drivers’ Championship therefore increased to 48 points. Sebastian Vettel finished third for Ferrari.

2022 race was mired in controversy and anger, in similar conditions to 2014, the FIA dispatched a recovery vehicle while the race was under double yellow flag conditions, which meant that the vehicle was on the track at the same time as the Formula One cars themselves.

Bianchi’s compatriot Pierre Gasly narrowly avoided crashing into a crane under double yellow flag conditions, which meant that the vehicle was on the track at the same time as the Formula One cars themselves. Drivers and team bosses united to call the decision from race control “unacceptable”. Following the red flag several drivers took to Twitter condemning the situation.

Race & Circuit Guide

Round

04 of 24

Race

Formula 1 MSC Cruises Japanese Grand Prix 2024

Venue

Suzuka International Racing Course, Suzuka, Mie Prefecture, Japan

Configuration

2003 Grand Prix

Circuit Length

5.807 km (3.608 mi)

Laps

53

Race Distance

307.471 km (191.053 mi)

Lap Record

Race

01:30.983 (Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes W10, 2019, F1)

Outright

Most wins drivers

Michael Schumacher (6))

Most wins manufacture

McLaren (9

Fast facts

Ferrari has not won at Suzuka since Michael Schumacher’s last Japanese success in 2004. Verstappen looked unstoppable, his first lap in Q3 was fast enough for pole but he then improved by a tenth and a half, securing his pole

Charles Leclerc could only manage fourth half a tenth behind Norris and a tenth ahead of Perez. Perez spilt the two Ferraris, he was a tenth faster than Sainz, but nearly eight-tenths off his teammate Verstappen, and moved into fifth on his final attempt. However, Leclerc and Sainz only managed a single run in Q3 where they were unable to find enough performance to get ahead of the McLarens.

Verstappen went on to take a dominant win after holding off both McLaren’s at the start before building a twenty-second lead over Lando Norris and putting himself in the position to win the championship in the sprint in Doha in thirteen days if he finishes third.

Norris managed to pass Piastri at the start before Verstappen fended him off at Turn Two, from then on it was a Verstappen masterclass as he led the whole race. The Englishman did get a second attempt following a collision between Valtteri Bottas and Alex Albon brought out the safety car, but once again Verstappen fended off Norris at the restart.

For Verstappen’s only title rival, Sergio Perez it was a nightmare race two front-wing changes following a collision with Kevin Magnussen and Lewis Hamilton, before eventually retiring. Perez had tried to pass Magnussen diving down the inside at Hairpin making contact resulting in a five-second penalty.

Pole Position

Max Verstappen

Red Bull – Honda RBPT

01:28.877

Podium

Po

Name

Po

Name

Po

Name

1

Max Verstappen

NED

Red Bull – Honda RBPT

01:30:58.421

25

2

Lando Norris

GBR

McLaren – Mercedes

+00:19.387

18

3

Oscar Piastri

AUS

McLaren – Mercedes

+00:36.494

15

Fastest

Lap

Max Verstappen

NED

Red Bull – Honda RBPT

01:34.163

1

What to watch for?

In Melbourne, Carlos Sainz once again ended Max Verstappen’s ten wins in a row, like he did going into this race six months ago. But the big question I think going into this weekend was it a bib for Red Bull inn Melbourne? Many will think given their dominance in recent years it was be, if Red Bull isn’t as strong it could indicate that they won’t win as much this season and is there going to be opportunities for others to win races?

Red Bull I feel are still the favourites given they have been so dominant over the last two years and this is a circuit where you need to build into the weekend. The question is do they have a good allrounder as you need to have a good car in the corners but without compromising speed.

Ferrari, following the win in Melbourne, I feel we can firmly conclude that the team are on top of their biggest weakness in recent years, and has got on top of the tyre issues. I think that they are now able to fight in races but the question remains about Red Bull’s strength and what that means going through the season

Mercedes had a difficult Melbourne, weekend ending in a double retirement but neither George Russell or Lewis Hamilton finished. They never looked comfortable with the car but I think that was more a circuit-specific issue rather than a backward step, but they will need to be wary of it at street circuits

It’s slightly more geared toward downforce that means it’s a circuit about getting the balance right. This is an old circuit which means it carries the risk v reward factor when it comes to overtaking, that can lead to safety cars if drivers get beached in the race also about strategy as overtaking can be more difficult. It’s going to be colder its early April so it could impact, like we saw when Shanghai moved from October to April fifteen years ago, on tyre warm up.

This weekend we are likely to get a truer picture of the order due to Suzuka’s mix of low- and high-speed corners as well as a long straight. We are here a lot earlier in the season that could make it more difficult physically for drivers because of the figure-of-eight layout and this is a weekend you have to be careful as this is an old circuit that means grass and gravel.

Suzuka is another difficult race for all the teams, we get plenty of action as mistakes can lead to safety cars and red flags in qualifying, as this is an old circuit with grass and gravel. Overtaking is possible but not without risks, it’s also aa hard circuit on the cars given the high speed and huge braking zones.

2023 vs 2022 Race Data

P1 Fastest

P2 Fastest

P3 Fastest

Q1 Fastest

Q2 Fastest

Q3 Fastest

Race Time

Fastest Lap

2023

01:31.647

01:30.688

01:30.267

01:29.878

01:29.940

01:28.877

01:30.58.421

01:34.183

Diff

-10.601

-11.247

-00.404

-00.346

+00.015

-00.421

-01:29:14.423

-10.228

2022

01:42.248

01:41.935

01:30.671

01:30.224

01:29.925

01:29.304

03:01:44.004

01:44.411

2023 Lap time comparison

FP1

FP2

FP3

Q1

Q2

Q3

Race

Team

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Race.
