The main Autódromo José Carlos Pace was renamed in 1985 following the death of Jose Carlos Pace while its inner kart circuit is named after three-time champion Ayrton Senna. But to many ,it’s still known by its former name Interlagos.

The 2.677-mile circuit was built between two artificial lakes, Guarapiranga and Billings where the name Interlagos comes from (In English it translates roughly as ‘Between two lakes’), which were built in the early 20th century to supply the city with water and electric power, the circuit has been home to classic title deciders over the last two decades. The circuit is a technical circuit which requires more downforce and driveability.

Built on a hillside inside a natural bowl, the circuit flows around the hilly terrain of the area, making it harder to drive and demanding on drivers. The physical demands are also increased by the fact this is one of the few anti-clockwise circuits placing more pressure on the drivers’ necks. It’s also an old school circuit while there is tarmac run off go too far or off in the wrong place you will find the gravel.

Interlagos in recent years has thrown up brilliant races and that’s despite the previous regulations being difficult to overtake. But anything can happen, mixed conditions are also common being in a region of the world where weather can change in minutes from a warm sunny afternoon to torrential rain.

The circuit is known for its many inclines and formerly bumpy surface, which could take its toll on F1 cars because they have a very low ride height and little suspension travel. This could cause issues with porpoising which has been a bigger issue for the cars this season.

The designers took their inspiration from three main circuits: Brooklands in the UK, Roosevelt Raceway in the USA and Montlhery in France. Interlagos was a five mile circuit winding its way around a natural bowl, however that has since been halved into the current circuit. As in Mexico City, this is another

The first Grands Prix at Interlagos were during the second world war, to this day it retains it reputation for being tough and demanding circuit with many challenging corners, elevation changes, a rough surface, and little room for error.

The atmosphere of Interlagos is one which breaths F1, one which some believe still should be the final race of the season. Between 2004 and 2013, expect 2005, 2009 and 2010 was often the final race leading to dramatic and action-packed title-deciding races, many would love it to return to that slot.

This weekend marks fifty years since the first F1 Grand Prix, although 1972 was an non-championship race, and except 2020, there has always been a race in Brazil shared between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

Emerson Fittipaldi was the first winner of his home Grand Prix, Sao Paulo born drivers have always gone well in their home city, Pace who the circuit of named after winning in 1974. When the race returned to Interlagos in the 1990s, Senna took his only home win in 1991 and 1993, Felipe Massa in 2006 and that dramatic 2008 title decider.

1977 was won by Reutemann, but the drivers began complaining about Interlagos very rough surface, and the event was then relocated for a year to the new Jacarepaguá circuit in Rio de Janeiro. It returned to Interlagos two years later with Jacques Laffite to complete his and Ligier’s conquest of the opening South American rounds in Argentina and Brazil.

The following year and until 1989 the race moved to Rio, at the now demolished Jacarpagua, now the Barra Olympic Park after being demolished in 2007. The tropical conditions in Rio made the race one of the most physically demanding of the season with drivers often collapsing at the end of the race.

The races in Rio were dominated by Alian Prost with the Frenchman earning the title ‘King of Rio’, he took four wins at the circuit. Including beating teammate Ayrton Senna who started on pole in his first race for McLaren in 1988, and finishing second the Brazilian would be later disqualified for switching to his spare car after the parade lap had begun. The 1989 event was the last race at Jacarepagua.

The current layout of Interlagos was introduced in 1990 although minor changes to the 2.6-mile circuit have taken place. The circuit has a reputation for dramatic races and chaos. Prost took his fortieth career win in 1990, that was unpopular given the crash with senna at Suzuka the previous season.

Senna’s victory the following year is seen as one of the greatest drives in the sport’s history, throughout the race his gearbox failed in the closing stages making the car much more difficult and physically demanding to drive, but he still eventually won holding off Williams driver Riccardo Patrese. His exhaustion was so high that had to be extricated from his car.

The Brazilian’s second home win would come in 1993, before crashing out in his final home race when battling with Michael Schumacher. Schumacher would go on to win three more times and the final race of his career was at Interlagos in 2012. The circuit is no stranger to dramatic final races, in the mid-2000s several titles went down to the final races.

Fernando Alonso took both his championships here in 2005 and 2006, he became the then-youngest champion in 2005 when he was third to clinch the title with two races remaining.

For 2006, the Brazilian Grand Prix, as in 2004, was moved to the prestigious position of hosting the final round of the season, in what was Michael Schumacher’s first farewell to Formula One, before his return for the 2010 season. Schumacher suffered a puncher which dropped him to the back but he was able to recover to fourth with Alonso second he was able to take his second title.

2008 is one of the most memorable and dramatic title deciders in the sports history, a wet-dry-wet race put local boy Felipe Massa against Sir Lewis Hamilton. A frantic and chaotic final few laps as the rain moved in saw Hamilton drop behind Timo Glock and out of title contention. As Massa took his second home win and briefly the title, at the final real opportunity to overtake, Hamilton passed Glock for fifth thus taking the title by a point.

Jenson Button would need the same result to cap a fairy-tale season for Brawn GP the following season, he needed to beat his teammate and local man Rubens Barrichello by four points and have Sebastian Vettel third to clinch the title. Barrichello took the pole, Button was knocked out in Q2 and Vettel in Q1.

Button played the long game while Vettel made a poor start, the Englishman but the end of lap one was just outside the points but his better pace saw him overtake several cars. At the second stop, Button and Hamilton both leapfrogged Vettel, but the Brawn was stuck behind Heikki Kovalainen.

Meanwhile, results of others were going Button’s way, Barrichello was forced into an extra stop after inadvertently damaging the Brazilian’s tyre, causing a puncture and forcing him to pit. He resumed in eighth, with Vettel’s fourth placing meaning that, barring a dramatic turn in events, Button would be the 2009 World Champion even if he retired.

Button’s fifth place from fourteenth on the grid was enough for him to secure the 2009 World Championship, becoming the tenth British champion and the first British champion to succeed another since 1969, when Jackie Stewart succeeded Graham Hill as World Champion.

The next title decider was another classic in 2012, it put Vettel up against Alonso as they fought for their third title. But Vettel made a poor start dropping him to last after spinning off at the Senna S on the opening lap, dropping him to last.

But it was a hugely impressive drive by the German who managed to overtake several cars getting up to sixth though Alonso was second, Vettel still took the title by three points.

The beginning of the hybrid era, as with many circuits, the race has been dominated by Mercedes. 2014 seeing Hamilton, now an honorary citizen of Brazil, finishing second behind Rosberg it was the same result in 2015. The Englishman finally took victory in a wet race which saw multiple accidents and Max Verstappen take a maiden podium despite dropping to sixteenth, take a maiden podium in fifteen laps.

Vettel would win again after setting the pace and getting a good start in 2017, he passed Valtteri Bottas into the first corner. The race saw numerous first-lap crashes, Romain Grosjean losing the rear and clipping Esteban Ocon, while Stoffel Vandoorne and Kevin Magnussen also retired due to a collision on the first lap.

Since 2018 this race has been won by either Verstappen or Hamilton.

Race & Circuit Guide

Round

21 of 22

Race

Formula 1 Heineken Grande Premio de Sao Paulo 2022

Venue

Autódromo José Carlos Pace, São Paulo, Brazil

Configuration

2000

Circuit Length

4.309 km (2.677 mi)

Sprint

Laps

24

Distance

103.416km (64.248mi)

Race

Laps

71

Distance

305.879 km (190.064 mi)

Lap Record

Race

01:10.540 (Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes AMG F1 W09 EQ Power+, 2018)

Outright

N/A

Most wins drivers

Alain Prost (6)

Most wins manufacture

McLaren (12)

Fast facts

The city of São Paulo itself where Interlagos is located is known by the nickname “Land of the Drizzle”.

Since their return to the sport in 2010, Mercedes never failed to see both of their cars not finish until Valtteri Bottas retired from the 2019 event. Mercedes looked to be the team to beat having dominated FP1 but Hamilton knew for Sundays race because of penalties would start lower down for the Grand Prix. Valtteri Bottas was third going just over a hundredth ahead of the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez. The top two teams had a clear three-tenths advantage, but it was the Alpha Tauri of Pierre Gasly who was fifth ahead of the two Ferraris.

In the Sprint, it was Bottas who took victory by a second after passing both Verstappen and Hamilton on the opening lap. Bottas proved Mercedes had the better pace, he lead ever lap and secured the pole. Verstappen, meanwhile, was comfortably ahead of Carlos Sainz.

The Ferrari driver passed two cars into the Senna S on the opening lap. Hamilton pulled off the most overtaking as the seven-time champion worked his way from last to fifth.

Hamilton however despite his grid penalty and a ten-second gap with twelve laps to go, was able to take victory. The seven-time champion then passed the Dutchman after chipping away his lead getting alongside at the Senna S then followed him through the first sector and passed at Descida do Lago on lap fifty-nine.

Mercedes first tried to undercut Verstappen at the first stop, but things didn’t change with Red Bull were able to get the Dutchman 1.7 seconds ahead of Hamilton. But the Englishman had better pace than the Red Bull, at the second stops Mercedes undercut Verstappen.

Bottas finished third ahead of the second Red Bull of Sergio Perez, both drivers being unable to race in the closing stages. Bottas who started from pole position lost the lead to Verstappen at the start struggling to hold the lead, Pere also took advantage to get past the Mercedes.

Race Result – 1) L. Bottas, Mercedes, +00:13.579

What to watch for?

The big question is can anyone stop Max Verstappen, from taking sixteen wins if he wins the final two races? We have seen him, and Red Bull dominate the second half of the season they just appear to be able to win from wherever. But this could change we know with some drivers they ‘switch off’ but since Suzuka, I don’t think we have seen that and he is showing that might not be the case with him.

Ferrari appeared to struggle in Mexico City which could be because of the high altitude, we don’t know if that is because of altitude or not finding the right window. They really have been struggling in the second half of the season, they slipped to third in terms of performance can they correct that this weekend and get positive headlines as they look to go better next season.

This is a test for Mercedes, based on Austin and Mexico City I think they have the bouncing and porpoising under control now. But this feels like the big test because its more undulating and that has been the issue this season, like in Mexico City we are at altitude which acts a bit like a performance leveller and we know that this can be a crazy and chaotic race.

Interlagos is a challenging circuit we can see weather bubble up and rain move in creating rivers across the circuit. It does, however, dry quickly which leads to rapid track evolution, we can see drivers be caught out by the standing water and that can lead to safety cars in the sprint and the race and red flags in qualifying.

Being a sprint as well FP1 teams have to focus largely on qualifying, this weekend every session really does matter given the fact there’s little time to get the setup right as we go into parc ferme, with only minor changes, on Friday afternoon. But we haven’t seen in my view any major headaches caused by the sprint.

I think Alpine are the team still to who is leading the midfield, but Interlagos can mix things up given its various factors. I believe its hard to see them being beaten in the constructors at this stage, given we have two races to go this season I think its over. But we can see more great racing.

2019 vs 2021 Race Data

P1 Fastest

P2 Fastest

P3 Fastest

Q1 Fastest

Q2 Fastest

Q3 Fastest

Sprint

Race Time

Fastest Lap

2021

01:09.050

01:12.407

00:00.000

01:08.733

01:08.068

01:08.372

29:09.559

01:32:22.851

01:11.010

Diff

-7.092

+3.190

N/A

+0.491

-0.565

-0.864

-01:08.173

+0.312

2019

01:16.142

01:09.217

01:08.320

01:08.242

01:07.503

01:07.508

N/A

01:33:14.678

01:10.698

2021 Lap time comparison

FP1

Q1

Q2

Q3

FP2

Sprint

Race

Team

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Race Time

Gap

Inte

Race.
