The region has hosted the race since the very first Grand Prix first at Zeltweg Airfield between 1963 and 1969 before moving to the Red Bull Ring, as it currently called, in 1970.

Throughout its history and various different layouts over the last sixty-two years, the Red Bull Ring and its predecessor have been a highspeed technical circuit, following through the countryside. At 2.6 miles its one of the shortest circuits of the season meaning there is little chance of recovery following mistakes given the short lap.

The circuit requires low downforce and throughout its history has retained the character of the original circuit as well as the shape despite being shortened throughout its history. The Österreichring used between 1969 and 1995, on and off, was a very fast circuit with sweeping corners many of which aren’t taken in lower than fourth gear. The Red Bull Ring often provides one of the closest qualifying sessions of the season.

Despite its short nature, the Red Bull Ring is a varying circuit, between straights and hills which requires power, corners which require quick reaction and good driveability in the middle sector where the main overtaking opportunities are and straights between Red Bull (Turn Ten) and AMS AG (Turn Three) only broken by the nearly ninety-degree Lauda (Turn One) and the kink called Turn Two by the FIA & FIM.

Often these are also the two DRS zones during the race, but there could be concerns that they are too powerful given the regulation changes this season. These long straights are also followed by huge braking zones for the ninety-degree corners, which create opportunities for overtaking.

Coupled with this season’s regulation changes, as we often say at these types of circuits, the race should be closer and cars should be able to follow closer. The circuit I think should favour Ferrari, but the question remains whether they can start to take points away from Red Bull at a circuit which should be more favourable to them.

The 1971 race saw Swiss driver Jo Siffert dominate in his BRM and Briton Jackie Stewart took his second Drivers’ Championship. The 1975 event was marred by the fatal accident of American Mark Donohue, and the race itself was rain-soaked and was won by Vittorio Brambilla, winning the only F1 race of his career.

Throughout the 1980s and 2010s hybrid era, the advantage of hybrid power has been key, this is because of the altitude. Being at roughly 660 metres above sea level it is one of the highest altitude races of the season, which means that performance levels are more equal. We often see the fastest lap times of the season with the fastest laps below seventy seconds for a lap. Following cars should be easier and we have seen great races on track in the hybrid era.

This was seen in qualifying in 1982 when the top five on the grid were all turbo-powered cars. However come the race all but one car retired with Elio de Angelis locking into a battle with Keke Rosberg, despite the Williams driver chipping away at around 1.5 seconds a lap, Rosberg hung on to take victory by half a second.

in 1987, Nelson Piquet’s pole lap averaged a blistering 159.457 mph (255.756 km/h). In the same year, the deficiencies of the circuit – notably the narrow start-finish straight – were highlighted by two huge crashes on the opening lap, which saw the race restarted twice.

It was another decade before the race returned after a refurbishment after the high-speed nature, lack of protection from trees and embankments and accidents at the start of many races. The first race at the A1-Ring saw the basis of the circuit we know today.

Designed by Hermann Tilke, the circuit was made shorter and many of the corners were slowed down to create the current circuit. the Hella-Licht chicane, Flatschach, Dr. Tiroch curve and the first half of the backstretch run up to where the Bosch-Kurve was taken out and replaced with a bypass that went directly to the second half of the fast, uphill backstretch.

Despite being rebuilt and modified over the years it has become a hybrid between the modern tarmac run-off areas, but beyond them remains the gravel and grass. This circuit and race are always tended to be dominated by power units, including Ferrari in the 1970s and early 2000s with most of the races in the hybrid era being won by Mercedes since the race returned in 2014.

Ferrari’s Irvine took victory in 1999 as he set after his championship following Schumacher’s broken leg at Silverstone, it was the team’s first victory in Austria since 1970. McLaren took victory in both 2000 and 2001, Häkkinen leading from pole ahead of Coulthard.

Schumacher’s 2002 win is seen as one of the most controversial finishes to a Grand Prix in history. Ferrari ordered Rubens Barrichello, who had led most of the race to allow the German through, to take victory and extend his lead over Coulthard in the championship. That resulted in Schumacher, Barrichello and Ferrari all being fined $1m and a ban on team orders until Ferrari used them in 2010.

Schumacher won the final race at the A1-Ring in 2003 from pole ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, the Finn fending off Barrichello’s faster Ferrari in the closing stages with great defensive driving.

After a decade’s hiatus the circuit, now called the Red Bull Ring, returned to the calendar. Since then most of the ten races held at the circuit have been won by Mercedes, although in recent years things have not been plain sailing for the team with Red Bull taking victory twice in five races.

Spielberg’s return to the calendar in 2014 co-inside with the beginning of Mercedes’s domination of the sport, however, it was the Williams of Felipe Massa and teammate Valtteri Bottas who locked out the front row. In the race, however, they were soon passed by Nico Rosberg, while Hamilton worked his way to second during the first part of the race as then the Mercedes managed to undercut Bottas. Rosberg taking victory.

Hamilton took pole in 2016, but Rosberg lost ground at the start though he did recover to second there would be drama on the final lap. As they fought for the lead Hamilton went to the outside but Rosberg pushed him onto the grass, but Hamilton exited Turn Three making contact twice The German nursing his car to victory

Bottas took victory following his move to Mercedes in 2017, the Finn has always appeared to go strongly in Spielberg he will be hoping that the next two weekends can see him find the form he needs to stay at Mercedes. This circuit is his best having taken his first podium here in 2014.

Since joining Mercedes, excluding his 2019 retirement, Bottas has always finished on the podium. Mercedes have also won every race year that 2019 race also saw Hamilton and Bottas suffer a double DNF the team’s first because of technical issues since Melbourne 2011.

In 2020, due to COVID-19, the first two races of the season took place in Spielberg, a historic fortnight of racing followed as it marked the first time world championship Grands Prix were held at the same circuit.

Bottas again took pole for the opening race of the season ahead of Hamilton, that was despite him dipping a wheel onto the grass on his last Q3 attempt. Verstappen finished third in his Red Bull RB16, half a second behind the Mercedes pair. Lando Norris qualified a career-best fourth in his McLaren before taking his maiden podium.

Race & Circuit Guide

Round

11 of 22

Race

Formula 1 Rolex Grosser Preis Von Osterreich 2022

Venue

Red Bull Ring, Spielberg, Styria, Austria

Configuration

2016

Circuit Length

4.318 km (2.683 mi)

Laps

71

Race Distance

306.452 km (190.420 mi)

Lap Record

Race

01:05.619 (Carlos Sainz Jr., McLaren-Renault MCL35, 2020, Formula One)

Outright

Most wins drivers

Max Verstappen (4) *

Most wins manufacture

McLaren

Ferrari (6)

*including 2021 Styrian Grand Prix

Fast facts

The short track length at the Red Bull Ring often leads to tight qualifying sessions. 5 of the last 9 pole positions at the track have been decided by less than a tenth of a second.

Despite being the quickest lap to complete on the current calendar, with the 2020 pole time just under 63 seconds, the Red Bull Ring is actually only the fourth shortest track on the schedule, after Monaco, Mexico and Brazil.

The 1976 Austrian Grand Prix was the last F1 race that a female driver completed. Red Bull had looked to have the advantage all weekend as Verstappen looked to have the slight edge, although Mercedes weren’t far behind. Lewis Hamilton had looked to be a threat going onto the final runs in Q3, but that time was deleted as he exceeded track limit, leaving him a two-second Verstappen.

Verstappen went on to dominate the race finishing thirty-five seconds ahead of Hamilton. The Mercedes driver had attempted to undercut the Red Bull, but looked to have the edge throughout the race and his attempt to go after his rival. Lando Norris continued his strong season, though he was a lap down he managed to finish six seconds ahead of the Ferrari’s. At the start of the race, the Englishman had got past Perez early on and he had held him there until the end of lap ten.

Perez diving up the inside at Remus, McLaren realising that the battle was with Ferrari instructed Norris not to put up much of a defence.

Verstappen made it back-to-back poles after beating Lando Norris by four-hundredths of a second. Norris picked up a tow from the Red Bull, setting a fastest first sector meaning he manage to beat Sergio Perez to second. On their final laps neither Mercedes managed to improve leaving them fourth and fifth.

Verstappen went on to lead ever lap and take victory by fifteen seconds, he took his first career grand slam. It allowed him to extend his lead over Hamilton to thirty two-point, while Norris got the better start but couldn’t get past Verstappen at the start of the race after the Red Bull driver covered him off into the first corner.

Mercedes Valtteri Bottas was second after the team decided to switch him with Sir Lewis Hamilton after the seven-time champion struggled to chase after Norris. Hamilton appeared to be struggling with his tyres allowing the McLaren through before pitting for a second stop before Verstappen on lap fifty-four.

The seven-time champion appeared to pick up rear damage, which led to him dropping back and he would be eventually passed by Norris and Bottas

Styrian Race Result – 1) M. Norris, McLaren – Mercedes, +00:20.019

What to watch for?

This weekend is going to be about the battle between Red Bull and Ferrari, Carlos Sainz’s victory at Silverstone Ferrari are going to look to build on that victory to close the gap to Red Bull. Spielberg while it is a shorter lap than Silverstone its still a old school circuit at high speed, but lined with grass and gravel meaning if drivers go off they can become beached in the gravel. It’s a circuit where drivers can overtake and that creates great racing on track.

Sainz took his maiden win last weekend at Silverstone does that reinvigorate Ferrari’s campaign, they have not had a win at the Red Bull Ring since it returned in 2014. But in my view, it’s very similar to the circuits where they have been strong at earlier in the season. Can Charles Leclerc start to come back at Max Verstappen in the drivers as we see the final three races before the summer break?

Mercedes you need to think are on the way back and they just need to get lucky and take advantage of situations when they arise. I think though that on pure performance they can challenge now they appear not to be struggling as much with the porpoising and bouncing, however, beating Ferrari and Red Bull under normal circumstances I believe could be challenging. But we know how consistent George Russell this season has been in some ways leading the teams charge, how does he bounce back from his first lap retirement in Silverstone through no fault of his own?

The Alpine Alpha Tauri battle is another one to watch, both teams have shown flashes of speed and have often been fighting for positions behind the top three. I think however this circuit should favour Alpha Tauri who have looked better on the straights and in high-speed corners.

Race Data

P1 Fastest

P2 Fastest

P3 Fastest

Q1 Fastest

Q2 Fastest

Q3 Fastest

Race Time

Fastest Lap

AUT

01:05.143

01:04.523

01:04.591

01:04.249

01:03.927

01:03.720

01:23:54.543

01:06.200

Diff

-0.833

-0.889

+0.222

-0.195

-0.270

-0.121

+01:36.422

-0.858

STY

01:05.910

01:05.412

01:04.369

01:04.489

01:04.197

01:03.841

01:22.18.925

01:07.058

2021 Austrian Lap time comparison

FP1

FP2

FP3

Q1

Q2

Q3

Race

Notes

Team

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Fastest Time

Gap

Race.
