The city is no stranger to ‘Grand Prix’, the title of the race being around in the 1920s and 1990’s as an Indy Car race, although this weekend marks the first running of the F1 race.

Originally intended to be on the streets of Miami, that plan was abandoned due to complications, other locations were considered before settling on the Hard Rock Stadium. When I heard this there might have been concerns about a repeat of Las Vegas in the 1980s, not the circuit we will see next year.

While 2022 will mark the first Miami Grand Prix, it is not the first time that the Grand Prix title has been given to a race held in the city. The very first Grand Prix of Miami took place in 1926. It was held on a board track, a banked oval course, the surface of which was made up of wooden planks.

the track is the culmination of a development process that simulated no less than 36 different layouts before settling on a thrilling, 19-turn lap that provides a street circuit vibe, not dissimilar to Melbourne’s Albert Park. Built using existing roadways within the stadium ground, the circuit will not use any public streets that are located around the Hard Rock Stadium.

There are elevation changes too, the main one found between Turns 13 and Snakes Canal (16), with the track heading over an exit ramp and under various flyovers across uneven ground. The Toll Gantry chicane (14-15), meanwhile, has an uphill approach, with a crest in the middle, and then drops down on the exit.

The Miami race is one of Liberty’s first big moves into its ‘home’ market, when they took over the sport in 2017 they were very keen to have several races in ‘destination cities’ and this race meets that target. This circuit will be a big unknown for drivers as it wides its way for 3.36mi around the grounds of the Hard Rock Stadium.

The circuit has been designed to allow drivers to follow closely and try and overtake, it almost reminds me of a Formula E circuit with the way it follows and we know how close the racing has been since that series was created in 2014. But there are

The layout of the circuit also features elevation changes thanks to an exit ramp and under various flyovers across uneven ground. The Toll Gantry chicane, meanwhile, has an uphill approach, with a crest in the middle, and then drops down on exit. On paper, it looks to be quite technical and was the result of thirty-six different configurations.

This circuit was designed in a similar way to Jeddah and co-insides with this year’s regulation changes, this should create closer and more exciting racing which was the aim of the changes. The stadium will provide a rare 365 view of the circuit for those who have tickets, them a rare chance to view the race from every angle.

The big unknown with this being a new circuit is how the cars perform on track, can we see them get close and will there be overtaking. Track evolution will be massive throughout the weekend, both with it being a new and a street circuit that could be huge, and that could mean an interesting qualifying as the track rubbers in.

The battles on track I think will be along the three effective straights between Marina and Florida’s Turnpike (Turns Eight to Eleven) and the straight on 203rd St/North Campus, both looking as if they finish with hard braking events.

But I think looking at the images I have seen online the walls are close which means drivers will need to be careful. Also reacting quickly to events on track like we saw in the opening races this season and generally at this type of circuit anything cab happy, we will need to be prepared for anything thing to happen given this is both a new and a street circuit.

Race & Circuit Guide

Round

05 of 23

Race

Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix 2022

Venue

Miami International Autodrome, Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, Florida, United States

Configuration

2022

Circuit Length

5.410 km (3.362 mi)

Laps

57

Race Distance

308.370 km (191.612 mi)

Lap Record

Race

N/A

Outright

N/A

Most wins drivers

N/A

Most wins manufacture

N/A

Fast facts

Miami will be the eleventh location to host a race in the United States since the Championship began in 1950, following Indianapolis, Sebring, Riverside, Watkins Glen, Long Beach, Las Vegas, Detroit, Dallas, Phoenix and

Austin.

Miami Gardens and stadiums complex is home to several sports events the NFL, Tennis, Major League Baseball, this year it adds F1, W Series, US F4 to the serval sporting events in the area

The Miami metropolitan area, with a population of almost 6.2 million, is the most populous urban area in Florida and the seventh-most populous in the United States

Florida has one the longest wait of any region in the world for F1 to return, the state last hosted a world championship Grand Prix in 1959. They both look very evenly matched on track, however, we don’t yet know who might have the edge because Verstappen has not had a race where he hasn’t won or retired. That I think is going to be something we will learn in the coming races.

The fight between Red Bull and Ferrari is going to be the story, Leclerc dominated at the last street circuit like this, I think Miami is going to be an in-between Jeddah and Melbourne. But we need to see the track in action, this weekend should see the track ramp up throughout the weekend.

I think its too soon to say if this is a Monaco or Baku/Jeddah style circuit, this is going to be a learning weekend for all the teams. If it is a Monaco style it could give us a really good idea of what might happen.

Mercedes could have the opportunity this weekend as this is a street circuit, we saw them have better weekends in Jeddah and Melbourne. It is about them finding the sweet spot, they believe if they can do that they could potentially join the title race but they need to do that sooner rather than later. Realistically they believe its over.

Miami on paper looks to be a mixture of a technical and high-speed circuit, the first sector is twisty before opening up after Marina, so teams might be careful to find a balance between the two. Friday is going to be a big learning day for all the teams and drivers to find a set up, think of it as a sprint weekend without the sprint as FP1 is going to be mainly for drivers to get there eye in.

McLaren could be a team to watch following the bounce back in Melbourne and Imola they are finding form again, maybe they are going to emerge as the biggest threat to Mercedes this season. Alpine as well, they have been looking decent all year to fight with McLaren, Haas go into one of their home races with the best chances of points I can remember.

Tyres

White Hard (C2)

Yellow Medium (C3)

Red Soft (C4)

Round four sees the first of three transatlantic crossings this season as F1 returns to Florida for the first time since 1959 for the Miami Grand Prix.
