NOTEBOOK – European Grand Prix – Review
Nico Rosberg took victory around the streets of Baku to take the first win at the Grand Prix of Europe extending his lead over team-mate Lewis Hamilton at the top of the championship.
Radio Gaga Goo Goo
Lewis Hamilton says he doesn’t see the benefit’ of the ban on conveying messages via radio after enduring a frustrating him in the race. Teams are banned from aiding drivers during the race. The world champion was struggling to get the power down in the closing stages of the race because he had trouble with the ERS.
He told Sky Sports “had no idea, there were like 16 different engine positions and, in those engine positions, like 20 positions. I had no idea what problem I had, just low power. I didn’t do anything, it just fixed itself.”
Regarding the radio ban, he added: “I don’t see the benefit.” It emerge Rosberg had a more serious issue which the team were able to tell him about. But the team said “Lewis had the setting from the start of the race and it was not obvious that this setting was causing the problem.
Perez P3
It was a great race on what have been on the whole has been great weekend starting on Friday when they had that strong FP2 from Sergio Perez. This will be a boost setting them up for two potential good races with high speed circuits the Red Bull Ring and Silverstone coming up.
McLaren
It’s hard sometimes watching that McLaren are one of the most successful teams in the sport history. We need the name back at the top but they lack performance and engine power. They didn’t score points and Fernando Alonso was forced to retire with downshift problems.
Strategy compromised
Everyone expected a safety car in that race because street circuits you are normally certain to have a accident. So teams would have under fuelled going into the race which means drivers would have to do more fuel saving in that race.
Next stop – the Red Bull Ring
Baku is like the Red Bull Ring so the high speed nature will give teams a good rounding for Austria and Silverstone. Expect the fight in Austria to be for best of the rest behind Mercedes. Mercedes will want a race without problems and we may have a good race.
