This season was scheduled to have the current top figure of twenty until the cancellation of this year’s German Grand Prix. But as we reported yesterday the 2016 calendar is provisionally scheduled to have twenty one.

There are reports that races could take place in Qatar, Los Vegas and South Africa. While next year the calendar will add races in Azerbaijan and New Jersey.

Must stay ‘aggressive’ on strategy

Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene says the team must remain aggressive on strategy if it wants to consistently beat Formula 1 rival Mercedes.

The team took advantage of its better tyre wear to fight off Mercedes when Sebastian Vettel took victory in the Malaysian Grand Prix. However the team continues to push hard to catch Mercedes in terms of outright pace.

Arrivabene told Autosport “We recognise the gap we have with Mercedes so the only way is to be aggressive. If one day, I don’t know when, we are able to catch them, the strategy must be put together in a way which is a bit different.

He added that improvements are on the way for next week’s Spanish Grand Prix.

Lotus significant upgrades

Lotus say they are aiming to bring “reasonably significant” package of upgrades to next weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, according to technical director Nick Chester.

Lotus had a mixed start to their 2014 season after failing to score points in the first two races but claimed points finishes with Romain Grosjean in China and Bahrain. Chester told Autosport “many teams will bring decent upgrades to the first European race of the season and we are working on bringing a reasonably significant package in terms of bodywork upgrades ourselves.”

He also said he believes the team is fighting with Red Bull for to be the fourth-fastest team on pure pace.

Too ‘Loyal to Caterham – Kovalainen

Heikki Kovalainen says he was ‘too loyal’ to Caterham in a move that ultimately finished his grand prix career. The Finn joined the outfit when it entered F1 as Lotus Racing in 2010, and he stayed with it until the end of 2012.

He says he would have been better off joining other teams in 2012 on the back of his strong season. He told Autosport “At the end of 2011, after my two years there, I felt, and even the public felt, that I had restored a little bit of the potential I had.”

However, he feels the team had built a strong base to build on and had potential, even if it ultimately failed. “The friends and the people I worked with, there were some really, really good people and I enjoyed my time there.”

25 races gets green light Formula One has been given the go ahead from the FIA to raise the maximum number of races to twenty five if the teams agree to the proposal.
