The Australian who has been delivering good pace and performance all weekend drove a great race controlling the pace.

However, there was some concern in the early stages about the charge in his ERS unit. He controlled the race and managed the problem from the early stages as Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton began to drop back. The Australian was losing around 20mph to his rivals on the straights, but though Vettel was consistently within touching distance after the Red Bull lost power, he could not squeeze his way past.

Ricciardo told Channel 4’s David Coulthard on the podium “think I can show emotion today than yesterday. This is two years in the making so I finally feel like the redemption has arrived.”

“We had problems. We had a lot to deal with during the race. I felt a loss of power and I thought the race was done. I got home just using six gears. Thanks to the team. We got it back.”

Vettel added “I think we had the pace but it was a tricky race. Daniel had the answer at all times. First stint I could follow him fairly easily and then he started to push as Lewis pitted. He was stronger there and I couldn’t follow. I was going through the tyres fairly quickly.”

A late virtual safety car also played a role, after Charles Leclerc and Brendon Hartley collided on lap seventy-two. That allowed Ricciardo to build a five-second gap over Vettel in the final four laps.

The Sauber driver briefly before the accident reported that he was struggling with the brakes. As he exited the tunnel he skied the car into the back of the New Zealander before going down the escape road. The collision caused significant damage to his rear wing and sent them both into retirement.

The Monacan told BBC News “I had no brakes, it is just a shame because it happens at (my) home (race) but there were a lot of positives to take from this weekend and forget the negatives.”

The New Zealander added in an interview with Channel 4, “It was a tough old race starting from 15th. Damaged my front wing at the start which was annoying but we were holding on, pretty happy with the race.”

Hamilton looked to be in the fight with Vettel throughout the race, however, the Mercedes driver struggled to manage his tyres. That meant he slipped away from the top two. His teammate Valtteri Bottas wasn’t far behind his fellow Finn Kimi Raikkonen, however, the battle was an exclusive fight between the two.

Force India’s Esteban Ocon was best of the rest, the Frenchman drove managing his pace to retain sixth place after running behind Bottas in the closing stages. It was a good job from Ocon, he managed to make the hypersoft tyres for nearly half the race.

Pierre Gasly fended off a challenge from Nico Hulkenberg in the closing stages as the Toro Rosso managed to hold off the German who was on an alternative strategy to get eighth. He was able to use the strategy to attack in the closing stages.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen used the same strategy to recover from the back of the grid to finish ahead of Carlos Sainz to finish ninth.

There was close fighting between the two, Sainz survived the first attack, but on the next attack, the Spaniard cut the first part of the Nouvelle Chicane. On the lap, he made the move stick, though he half cut and hit the kerb on entry and kept the place.

It was another difficult race for Williams, Sergey Sirotkin was handed a ten second stop-go penalty for a wheel infringement on the grid. His teammate Lance Stroll suffered two punctures, one of which was caused when he collided with Marcus Ericsson on the opening lap. They were the last classified finishers, more than a lap down.

RELATED

Notebook – Monaco Qualifying

Monaco GP – Qualifying Result

MONACO GP – Daniel Ricciardo beats Vettel to pole by two tenths as Verstappen fails to qualify after FP3 crash

Notebook – Monaco Practice

MONACO GP – Ricciardo fastest by two tenths over Verstappen as Red Bull show strong pace

MONACO GP – Ricciardo fastest by a tenth over Verstappen as lap time tumble

Prixview – Monaco Grand Prix

Data Profile – Monaco Grand Prix

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo continued his dominant weekend to take his first win at the Monaco Grand Prix.
