The British driver looked in form as he led every lap of the race building his lead over his teammate Valtteri Bottas with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.

The Mercedes drivers looked in great form after he made a brilliant start pulling away from the Williams of Lance Stroll at the start and tried to passed him at the start of the race, but the Canadian was soon struggled to stay with the Mercedes car who pulled away at the start.

Hamilton said “I love it here in Italy and I love the passion of the fans. They’re fantastic. I’m happy we did a great job, the team did an exceptional job. We owe it all to them.”

“Mercedes power is definitely better than Ferrari power. It worked well this weekend. The start was a bit difficult as the grip was quite low. It’s a great day and result for us.”

Hamilton’s first back-to-back win of the season will spark suggestions that the title race has begun to swing towards the silver arrows ahead of the remaining seven races.

Ferrari soon was overwhelmed by the pace of Mercedes, as they were soon falling away behind the silver arrows, by the end of the race they were over half a second behind the Mercedes. It was a good recovery drive by the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo who started sixteenth to beat the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen.

Vettel said “It was a difficult day. My race was isolated. We simply didn’t have the pace. For the last 20 laps l was struggling because l went off at Turn One and something broke on the car.

“Overall, you would say it is a bad day but l know the team is on the right way and we will only get stronger. There is a long way to go.”

It was a great race for all of the Mercedes powered cars as the Williams and Force India’s were running not far off the pace of the front runners. But both Stroll and Esteban Ocon, were unable ultimately to withstand the pressure of the works Mercedes of Bottas.

Monza was always going to be a tough race for McLaren, both cars appeared to be swamped by the midfield and fell away. That was before first Stoffel Vandoorne and then Fernando Alonso on the final lap of the race retired.

Both Mclaren’s reported before they retired that they had “no power”. There is a rumour that divorce between McLaren and engine supplier Honda could be announced this week, with the team switching to Renault for 2018.

Stroll was sixth after he withstood the pressure of team-mate Felipe Massa, while Sergio Perez unable to take advantage of the Williams fight to finish ninth. Massa and Perez also had a collision with Max Verstappen at the start, earning the Red Bull driver a puncher.

That forced him into an early pit stop because of a puncher dropping him to the back. He recovered to tenth, but only after brief contact with Kevin Magnussen on the approach to the second chicane after he had passed the Haas at the start of the lap.

Nico Hulkenberg led Carlos Sainz home for thirteenth. Haas’s Romain Grosjean who suffered damage on the opening was fifteenth with Sauber’s Pascal Wehrlein sixteenth.

result

RELATED

Italian GP – Qualifying result

ITALIAN GP – Hamilton sails to pole in a heavily interrupted qualifying as Mercedes power lock out front two rows

Notebook – Italian Practice

ITALIAN GP – Bottas goes fractionally faster than Hamilton in second practice

ITALIAN GP – Hamilton tops first practice as Mercedes look in a very strong position

Preview – Italian Grand Prix

Mercedes Lewis Hamilton has taken the lead of the world championship, after another dominant victory in the Italian Grand Prix.
