Sebastian Vettel has taken pole position for Sunday\u2019s Hungarian Grand Prix after beating his Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen. The German put in a stunning lap going one tenth faster than his team-mate.<\/p>\n
Vettel looked form throughout the session topping Q1 and looked in good form in the session. Ferrari has been looking in good form, while their title rival\u2019s Mercedes have appeared to be on the back foot this weekend. The German set his fastest lap on his first run in Q3, after he dipped into the 1:17\u2019s in Q2 then early on in the final part of the session he set his fastest lap a 1:16.2. He couldn\u2019t improve on his second run.<\/p>\n
Vettel Said \u201cThe car all day has been incredible We did a good step forward, I like this track a lot and to have the car in the right window, the sun and people around, that’s what it’s all about. Front row for us is incredible and we’re looking forward to tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vettel\u2019s team-mate Raikkonen, struggled early on in Q3 going fifth, but the Finn got his act together on his second run getting within two-tenths of the German. Raikkonen added \u201cIt was actually not too good. The start was good and the end was not too bad but on the chicane it was loose and I really threw it away. It’s second place but it’s frustrating. I felt like I had it.”<\/p>\n
Mercedes Valtteri Bottas start third after beating his team-mate Lewis Hamilton by one tenth. It was a messy final lap by the three times world champion, he was struggling with vibration on his tyres and that meant he struggled to get a lap together.<\/p>\n
That robbed the Mercedes driver of a record equalling sixty-eighth career pole. His problems cost him, more than four tenths of a second off the pace. The Silver Arrows appeared to struggle in the tricky first sector.<\/p>\n
Red Bull who had looked strong throughout practice looked as if they could have been challenging at the front in Q1 and Q2. However, Max Verstappen faded away in the final part only managing fifth, that was after he was second early on. That left him a tenth of the Mercedes.<\/p>\n
Daniel Ricciardo was sixth just .02 of the pace of his team-mate. That will be seen as great following the hydraulic issue that the Red Bull had in FP3.<\/p>\n
Renault\u2019s Nico Hulkenberg made it through to Q3 once again qualifying seventh going just under a tenth faster than McLaren\u2019s Fernando Alonso. McLaren has looked in strong form this weekend, as Alonso\u2019s team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne was ninth.<\/p>\n
Felipe Massa was replaced by the former Force India, Driver Paul di Resta after feeling unwell. The Scotsman had his first taste of a 2017 car in the anger of qualifying, it was a respectable afternoon and he will start nineteenth.<\/p>\n
Di Resta told Sky Sports, who he was meant to be commentating for \u201cHonestly I felt quite comfortable quite quickly. As soon as I let go of the pit limiter it was kind of there and I was improving by half a second a lap. There is still plenty of potential there.” Before the session , the teams deputy team principal Claire Williams said there was no target for the Scotsman.<\/p>\n
Di Resta\u2019s team-mate Lance Stroll was seventeenth. The team were looking for a top ten result, but that plan had to be abandoned after Massa withdrew. What made it more impressive was the turn around by the team and the fact, the Scotsman had not driven this car, he managed to improve with every lap.<\/p>\n
He split the Sauber\u2019s of Pascal Wehrlein and Marcus Ericsson to qualify nineteenth for his first grand prix since 2013. The team rightly called this a “fantastic job” in difficult circumstances.<\/p>\n
Esteban Ocon starts twelfth ahead of Daniil Kvyat’s Toro Rosso, Ocon’s Force India team-mate Sergio Perez and Romain Grosjean’s Haas.<\/p>\n
Grosjean’s team-mate Kevin Magnussen matched Perez to the thousandth of a second in Q1, but missed the Q2 cut by account of setting his best time later than the Force India driver.<\/p>\n
