The three times world champion looked in dominate form leading the race from the start and beating his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas and Ferrari Kimi Raikkonen.

The Englishman now equals the Scotsman Jim Clark on five wins and that victory allows Hamilton to close the gap in the championship to a single point. Hamilton’s victory never looked in doubt as he led every single lap, after he pulled away at the start.

Hamilton said “It’s never easy. The team were faultless all weekend. Valtteri had an incredible drive to go from ninth. I am coming out to crowd surf over there later guys!”

Team-mate Valtteri Bottas: “I’m really happy today, It was not an easy race to start from P9. The team did a perfect strategy and I just kept my head down. It’s a perfect weekend and well done to Lewis.”

Raikkonen looked on course for second place, before he was forced into making a late pit stop with two laps remaining because of a puncher. The Finn however managed to recover to third. His team-mate Sebastian Vettel suffered a tyre failure with two laps remaining.

Vettel’s hopes of winning the race were effectively over after he slipped behind the Red Bull on the opening lap. Ferrari eventually got Vettel ahead by stopping him for tyres a lap earlier, but the German was unable to catch Raikkonen.

Vettel said “We had a good car, especially in the corners, the balance was alright. In the race, the brakes caught fire from the start and from then it was a difficult race.”

It was also a brilliant recovery by Bottas who recovered from ninth to finish behind Hamilton. He inherited second from Raikkonen because of his tyre problem. Hamilton and Mercedes appear as if the momentum is beginning to swing there way.

Hamilton will be looking to carry his momentum into the next race in Budapest in two weeks time. The Brit has won in Budapest five times.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished fourth, despite his own tyre problems in the closing stages. Despite the tyre woes, it was a brilliant race for the Dutchman who hung on to finish ahead of his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.

Verstappen had come under pressure from Vettel in the race, but he out braked the Ferrari at Vale. That forced the Ferrari to run wide at Vale, which caused frustration for the German.

It was a great recovery drive by Daniel Ricciardo, the Australian started the race from the back because of a number of grid penalties for engine component and gearbox changes and dropping to last early on having run into the gravel when trying to pass Kevin Magnussen.

Things weren’t going well for Red Bull’s sister team Toro Rosso, with Carlos Sainz colliding with his team-mate Daniil Kvyat. That took the Spaniard out of the race and earned the Russian a drive through penalty.

It was a great race for Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg in sixth, earning his team there best result since the team returned as a works manufacturer last season. But while Hulkenberg got a good result for the team, team-mate Jolyon Palmler’s home race was over before it begun.

Palmer suffered a break by wire issue and hydraulic problems on the formation lap. That caused the first start to be aborted. Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez gave Force India another double points score, with Ocon eighth and Perez ninth.

Felipe Massa scored the final point for Williams.

Hopes of more progress for McLaren were dashed, Stoffel Vandoorne finished not far behind Massa. While Fernando Alonso, looked in strong form after recovering from the back to fourteenth, but the Spaniard was forced to retire.

Related

BRITISH GP – Qualifying Result

BRITISH GP – Hamilton takes pole by Half a second over Raikkonen, but placed under investigation for impeding

BRITISH GP – Bottas goes four tenths faster than Hamilton in second practice

BRITISH GP – Bottas tops times by seven tenths in first practice over Hamilton

PREVIEW – British Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has matched Jim Clark after taking his fifth win at his home British Grand Prix.
