Lewis Hamilton has taken pole position for this weekend\u2019s British Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver was a half a second faster than the Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen with team-mate Sebastian Vettel third.<\/p>\n
But Hamilton has been placed under investigation after he impeded the Haas of Romain Grosjean in the final corners. It\u2019s been a good start for the three times world champion to his home Grand Prix, with him looking in very good form in conditions to set the fastest middle sector.<\/p>\n
The Englishman put in a 27.3 on the supersoft tyres, to take a sixty-seventh career pole, which puts him within\u00a0 one place of equalling Michael Schumacher’s all time poles.<\/p>\n
Hamilton said \u201cI feel amazing in front of a great crowd like this. I hope you liked the lap. Always save best till last. I had to make sure I got that lap in. I couldn’t do it last weekend so I made sure I could here.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI generally like it to be dry but I like it when the conditions are tricky, The team did a fantastic job and when it dried out, the tyres were incredible and those fast corners.\u201d<\/p>\n
Raikkonen will start second after beating Vettel by two-tenths. The German, however, struggled in the first two sectors of the lap. Vettel will know that with Hamilton in form this weekend he needs to start with Hamilton in order to retain his lead at the top of the championship.
\nRaikkonen said \u201cIt felt OK, conditions were not easy, changing a lot, but the car we had was the best it has been this weekend. Not quite fast enough for first place.\u201d<\/p>\n
But that has been made easier, as Ferrari can use the undercut to get ahead of Hamilton. Hamilton\u2019s team-mate Valtteri Bottas qualified fourth, after a lock up cost him time.<\/p>\n
Red Bull\u2019s Max Verstappen was best of the rest in fifth. The Dutchman was one and a half seconds off the pace but had enough of a gap over Renault\u2019s Nico Hulkenberg in sixth. While Verstappen\u2019s team-mate Daniel Ricciardo dropped out in Q1.<\/p>\n
The Australian who was looking in great form suffered an engine problem in Q1, which will see him join McLaren\u2019s Fernando Alonso on the back row. But, further signs of improvement was shown by the Spaniard with him topping Q1. But he was the only driver to use the slicks.<\/p>\n
Sergio Perez out qualified his team-mate, Esteban Ocon, with the Force India duo seventh and eighth. While Alonso will start from the back, things are looking better for team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne.<\/p>\n
Vandoorne who has failed to live up to expectation this season will be pleased as he just made it through to Q3 by .08 of a second, pushing out the Renault of Jolyon Palmer.<\/p>\n
Toro Rosso\u2019s Daniil Kyvat qualified thirteenth with teammate Carlos Sainz fifteenth. However, they start alongside each other thanks to Alonso\u2019s grid penalty<\/p>\n
It was another disappointing qualifying for Williams, with Felipe Massa only fifteenth and his team-mate Lance Stroll sixteenth.<\/p>\n
