Brawn believes that the rule makers need to give extra help to new manufactures.

Brawn told Autosport “Under the new [post-2020] regulations, we’ll have to give consideration to new manufacturers who join after the start date, and acknowledge they might need additional support initially.”

“If you recall the token system, perhaps a new entrant might get more development tokens for the first couple of years – there are some smart initiatives you can use to encourage people into F1.” While repeating his desire to help Honda, Brawn says this must not create “unfair competition.”

Brawn believes engines “should be a performance differentiator” in F1, but the current rules have made the technology so complex that it discourages new entrants.

Silverstone may trigger break clause

Silverstone may trigger the break clause giving them a change to re-negotiate it’s contract with Formula One. The organisers of the race the BRDC, are finding the cost of its fifteen year deal unaffordable and must trigger the break clause two years before they wish to leave.

The process dubbed ‘article 50’ must be triggered by next Thursday if the organisers wish to break the deal. In December a letter to members the BRDC suggested that it was activating the break clause because of the “potentially ruinous risk” posed by hosting fees that increased annually.

The cost of the race is currently £17 million, but that will rise to £26m by the time the contract ends in 2026. The triggering of the break clause can mean a new deal can be made to save the race.

Both the BRDC and Liberty Media have made it clear that if so-called ‘article 50’ triggers that it doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the race.

F1 CEO Chase Carey has it clear “We will have a British Grand Prix.” However, they are wary of doing these deals as it might encourage other circuits to seek more favourable deals.

Silverstone tyre selections

Pirelli has announced the driver’s tyre allocations for next weekends British Grand Prix. For the weekend Pirelli nominated the middle range of tyres, with the white mediums, yellow soft and red supersoft compounds.

All of the drivers have used most of their chosen to go for the supersoft tyres. Mercedes Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas have six supersoft tyres, with Hamilton having six supersofts and a single medium. While Bottas has two mediums and five softs.

Both Red Bulls have eight supersofts, four softs and a medium. The Ferrari’s have nine supersofts, three softs and a medium. Force India’s, Sauber’s and Kevin Magnussen have seven supersofts, four soft and a medium.

Magnussen’s team-mate Romain Grosjean has ten suppersofts, four soft and two mediums. The McLaren’s have seven supersofts, five soft and a medium.

Both Williams have seven supersofts, five softs and a medium. Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat has ten supersofts, two softs and a medium, while Carlos Sainz has nine supersofts, three softs and a medium.

Both Renault have eight supersofts, four softs and a medium

Oil burning row because teams pushed to limit

Renault believes the that the controversy around oil burning would not be rumbling on still if some teams hadn’t been pushing the regulations to the limit.

The oil burning issue was raised before Christmas by Ferrari who asked the FIA if it was legal to burn oil as fuel to deliver a power boost. At the last race Red Bull added to suspicions accusing Ferrari of breaking the rules.

Ferrari had accused Mercedes last year of using the same method to unlock extra gains. This prompted the FIA to issue clarification making it clear that no team was allowed to use any chemicals in its oil that could help with combustion.

Both Mercedes and Ferrari have denied wrong doing. However, Renault believes the FIA would not have issued a directive if there weren’t suspicions.

Renault engine boss Remi Taffin, told Motorsport.com “You never have these kind of discussions and clarifications from the FIA if something hasn’t been done.”

“But I have to say that as far as we are concerned, we did not really pay attention to this [last clarification]. We had much more to do rather than get the last bit out of this kind of things.” Taffin is confident this new ruling will resolve the issue.

Alonso must be at Ferrari or Mercedes

The manager of Fernando Alonso and former Renault boss Flavio Briatore says the Spaniard must be driving at Mercedes or Ferrari next season.

Briatore set the rumour mill off in Baku after he refused to rule out Alonso returning Ferrari. Now he has repeated Alonso’s desire to drive for a top team.

He told Auto Motor und Sport “Fernando must go to Mercedes or Ferrari. Renault is still a good distance from being a top team.

“In football, there are ten attractive clubs in Europe. Messi would have a much wider choice. In Formula 1 you can only win with three teams.”

Kubica to do second test for Renault

Renault and Robert Kubica are to have a second test to explore if the Pole could make a return to Formula One. Kubica’s career was cut short because of a rally crash in 2011, and hasn’t raced in the sport since.

Last month, Kubica took part in a test in Valencia but there are questions whether Kubica’s ability to make a full comeback to F1 because of the restrictions imposed upon him by his arm injury.

However, while a return is not close to happening, it is closer than it was before Kubica drove in Valencia last month. The Pole who won the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix, was seen as a future star of the sport.

On Sunday Kubica told Sky Sports “I know I can do pretty well behind the wheel of an F1 car already after one day of testing. So more can come from me.”

“It is a good feeling. It is something I was not expecting, to deliver so good straight away. he gives me, not confidence because I knew as a drive the skills are there, but a relief that can do it physically, that I can make the job.”

However admitted there was a long way to go but he enjoyed driving the car. The car had been slightly modified to suit his physical limitations, the control buttons are on the left-hand side of the steering wheel and adapt the gearshift so that up and down shifts are both handled by the left-hand.

But there are questions over his ability in the 2017 car, as they are faster and more physical than the one he has tested so far.

This all will pile pressure on Jolyon Palmer after a difficult first eight races of the season and the team have been considering replacing him for the second half of the year.

Rule breaks to help new manufacturers Rule breaks for new manufactures may have to be offered in the future following the persistent problems that Honda has had since they returned to the sport, according to Formula One’s managing director and former Honda team principal Ross Brawn.
