Lewis Hamilton has taken his sixth win and his third of the season after dominating the Canadian Grand Prix. The three times champion looked in fine form building his lead through-out the race over his Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas<\/p>\n
Hamilton\u2019s victory allows him to close the gap in the championship to twelve points to Ferrari\u2019s Sebastian Vettel. It adds to what has been a record breaking weekend as it moves him a step closer to Micheal Schumacher\u2019s record of seven wins in Montreal.<\/p>\n
Hamilton said on the podium \u201cBig thank you to this crowd. Every year the energy grows. I had my first pole here and my first win here. To repeat it is incredibly special.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cValtteri did fantastically well to get the points for the team. I am over the moon. \u201c<\/p>\n
Mercedes had expected to be under pressure from Ferrari during the race. The treat from the Italian\u2019s never really materialised, as Sebastian Vettel was forced to stop early on, following damage to his front wing after brushing against the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.<\/p>\n
Bottas also appeared as if he was unable to fight Hamilton on track. Verstappen got away well to be behind Bottas and Raikkonen, before he swept around Vettel at Turn One.<\/p>\n
That forced Vettel into an early stop and a two-stop strategy while Verstappen’s surge would curtail his race because of a battery failure, leading to his retirement.<\/p>\n
Chaos followed shortly after, as the Toro Rosso of Carlos Sainz tangled with the Haas of Romain Grosjean. That set Spaniard up to go into the side of Felipe Massa, in Turn Three, that meant that McLaren\u2019s Fernando Alonso was forced into avoiding action.<\/p>\n
Red Bull\u2019s Daniel Ricciardo was third ahead of the force India\u2019s of Sergio Perez who held up his team-mate Esteban Ocon late in the race. Perez ignored the request by the team to release his French team-mate passed.<\/p>\n
But Perez had other ideas demanding the team “let them race” and it led to a heart-in-mouth climax to the race for the team.<\/p>\n
There were several dicey moments as Vettel closed in, Ocon’s attempted pass into the final chicane allowing the Ferrari to close up and pass the Frenchman into the first corner on lap 65.<\/p>\n
It was another good weekend for Force India as the team once again got both cars into the points. Perez and Ocon both took advantage of Ferrari\u2019s Kimi Raikkonen break failure in the closing stages, however got his car home in seventh.<\/p>\n
Renault\u2019s Nico Hulkenberg as eighth ahead of Lance Stroll who scored his first points of his career claiming ninth for Williams in his first home race.<\/p>\n
It was a good race for Fernando Alonso on his return to the sport, he was looking on course for McLaren\u2019s first points of the season. However old problems raised their heads on the penultimate lap when his engine forced him to retire.<\/p>\n
