Kimi Antonelli beat Max Verstappen by almost two tenths to secure pole position for the United States Grand Prix, the Italian who could be the youngest ever world champion after the race claimed his seventh pole of the season. Verstappen put himself three and a half hundredths ahead of teammate Isack Hadjarr.<\/p>\n
Antonelli will become world champion on Sunday if he wins the race in Austin with Hamilton lower than fourth and Russell lower than eighth. Hamilton is already below that position having qualified fifth, while Russell will start sixth ahead of the McLarens of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.<\/p>\n
The seven-time champion was out-qualified by five and a half hundredths by Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc. Ferrari had looked like the team to beat having topped practice, but that was before as he has done many times this season Antonelli surged to the front to secure pole.<\/p>\n
Leclerc was nearly six hundredths faster than teammate Lewis Hamilton with Antonelli\u2019s other main rival George Russell a tenth and a half behind the Ferrari duo. If the race were to finish how it starts Antonelli cannot mathematically seal the title as Hamilton and Russell would be still in the fight.<\/p>\n
Oscar Piastri finished nearly a quarter of a second ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris, the likely outgoing champion having his fastest time which would of put him ahead of the Australian deleted for track limits. The two Racing Bull\u2019s completed the top ten as Arvid Lindblad set the identical time as Norris, aided by teammate Liam Lawson.<\/p>\n
But Lindblad will take a five place penalty for a change of power units beyond his\u00a0 allocation.<\/p>\n
Pierre Gasly missed out on Q3 by just over two hundredths, the Alpine putting himself eight hundredths faster than the Audi\u2019s with Nico Hulkenberg nearly a tenth and a half ahead of teammate Gabreil Bortoleto. While the second Alpine of Franco Colapinto was nearly a tenth ahead of Fernando Alonso.<\/p>\n
Alonso managing to improve from Q1 time \u00a0by going over two tenths faster than Ollie Bearman. There are teammates both were knocked out, Esteban Ocon was fastest of those knocked out in Q1 as the Frenchman went nearly a tenth and a half ahead of Lance Stroll.<\/p>\n
The two Cadillacs completed the field Sergio Perez nine hundredths faster than\u00a0 Valtteri Bottas<\/p>\n
