Built on a man-made island from the building of the subway and the venue for the 1978 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the rowing lake running behind the pit lane, long since closed, Expo 1967 and permanent sections create a mix between a permanent and street circuit.

Montreal can be compared to Albert Park in Melbourne as it uses public roads running around the island, though much of the barriers and infrastructure is permanent, and it hosts other races and sports like triathlons, rowing and swimming across the complex spanning two islands. The current circuit layout dates back to 2002, though most of the facilities around the circuit were rebuilt in 2009 and during its Covid-19 hiatus in 2020-21.

The circuit can be described as both a street and a purpose-built circuit as it’s lined with walls and runs around the island. Key to this circuit is the straight-line speed of Baku but the low downforce of Monaco, or becoming beached in the gravel traps. The race has a reparation for throwing up odd results and surprises.

Perhaps the best and worst places to overtake are very likely, as it has wide-open corners and tricky chicanes. Mistakes can lead drivers to crash overtake, is the Turn Twelve-Thirteen Chicane or The Wall of Champions, officially named the Quebec Wall, a tricky low-speed chicane following a very long Casino Straight (Droit du Casino), which adds to the high brake demands on the cars. As of 2023, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve, all in 1999, gave the wall its name.

Since then, the wall has claimed Carlos Sainz Jr, Nico Rosberg, Sebastian Vettel, Derek Warwick and Jenson Button. It’s a tricky low-speed chicane following a very long straight, which adds to the high brake demands on the cars, and missing the turn-in point.

The street-style circuit means accidents can lead to safety cars and red flags. We have seen many dramatic moments around one of the fans, and drivers enjoy, as it offers something very similar to Melbourne, being in the heart of the city.

The first world championship race was held in Mosport Park as part of an alternation deal with Mont Tremblant near Montreal. The race was won by Jack Brabham with his New Zealander teammate Denny Hulme completing a Brabham 1–2. Like this year’s race, the 1968 race was paired with a race in the US.

The race was dominated by Chris Amon, leading every lap until lap seventy-three when he retired with a gearbox failure, handing victory to the McLaren duo of Denny Hulme and Bruce McLaren. Results but Hulme level on points with two races to go in Watkins Glen and Mexico City.

The 1974 event saw Fittipaldi win while his championship rivals Clay Regazzoni finished 2nd and Jody Scheckter crashed heavily after a brake failure on his Tyrrell. The race in 1976 was one where James Hunt found out that his nine points from Brands Hatch were taken away and he was disqualified; Hunt won the Canadian Grand Prix event that year, driving furiously throughout the race.

1977 saw the last race at Mosport, and Gilles Villeneuve made his debut. The safety came to a head following two crashes Ian Ashley had a horrendous accident while cresting a bumpy rise. Ashley’s Hesketh flipped over the Armco guardrails and went into a television tower. The German-born Englishman was seriously injured and safety operations to rescue him were inefficient and time-consuming; the lack of safety at Mosport was underlined when Jochen Mass lost control of his McLaren and hit a guardrail that virtually flattened upon impact. Jody Scheckter won this race in his Wolf, but with continuing safety concerns, a new proposal was brought forward.

1978 saw the race move to the Circuit Ile Notre-Dame, Notre-Dame Island Circuit, renamed Villeneuve after his death in qualifying for the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, which has hosted the race on all but four occasions, the latest interruption caused by the pandemic. But more death followed on Notre Dame Island a month later, after Riccardo Paletti crashed into the back of the Ferrari of Didier Pironi.

It was Villeneuve who won the first race on Notre Dame Island. Further modifications followed over the next few years, making the circuit faster. 1979 saw circuit layout modifications to make it faster, and Australian Alan Jones won, and he then won the 1980 race and the Drivers’ Championship that year. 1980 also saw a big start line pile-up, with involved Jones’s championship rival Nelson Piquet after he and Jones collided going into the very fast Droit du Casino corner.

Following Villeneuve’s death at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, weeks later at the circuit was renamed the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. But that year’s race was also marked by a driver fatality; Riccardo Paletti was killed after crashing into the Ferrari of Didier Pironi, who had the pole position, and stalling the engine of his Ferrari. Pironi lifted his hand to signal the problem just as the lights switched to green, which was too late to abort the start.

1985 saw Ferrari finish one-two with Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson taking top honours from Frenchman Alain Prost, while Lotus gained their final ever lock-out of the front row when Elio de Angelis and Ayrton Senna started one-two. 1986 was a competitive race. Finn Keke Rosberg in a McLaren charged through the field, caught and then passed Nigel Mansell.

Like many races in the late-1980s and early-1990s, the fight for victory was between Prost and Senna, as well Mansell. Senna took victory in 1990 despite the weather and several incidents. The only expectation was 1991 when Mansell looked on course for the win before his Williams failed on the final lap and allowed Nelson Piquet to take his twenty-third and final F1 victory in a Benetton. Austrian Gerhard Berger won the 1992 event after the dominant Mansell spun off after a collision with Berger’s teammate Senna.

1994 saw the last-minute changes following events of Imola, the very fast Droit du Casino curve being turned into a chicane, which Michael Schumacher won. Ferrari’s Jean Alesi won the following year, which would be the only win of his career. Jean Alesi inherited the lead when Michael Schumacher pitted with electrical problems and Damon Hill’s hydraulics failed.

The races from 1997 to 2004 (except 1999 and 2001) saw a romp of Michael Schumacher victories, all in a Ferrari. 1999 saw Finn Mika Häkkinen win, and in 2001, there was the first sibling 1–2 finish in the history of F1, as Ralf and Michael Schumacher topped the podium. The Schumacher brothers would finish 1–2 in 2003 as well, 2001 was also noted for Jean Alesi achieving Prost’s best finish of the season; he celebrated his fifth place by doing several doughnuts in his vehicle, and throwing his helmet into the crowd.

2007 saw Lewis Hamilton taking his debut pole and win, his first of seven wins in Montreal, after fending off teammate Fernando Alonso. Hamilton built a lead early on. His first win is seen as one of the best of his career, making him at the time the then-youngest pole sitter, race winner and championship leader.

Robert Kubica, who had a huge crash into the wall on the approach to L‘Epingle in 2007, would take his only race win the following year after a pit lane shunt involving Hamilton, on lap 19, after crashing into the back of Kimi Räikkönen’s Ferrari, followed by Nico Rosberg crashing into Hamilton.

2011, has gone down in history as one of the greatest and longest Grands Prix of all time, a race defined by the weather in biblical conditions. Jenson Button came from last following an early collision with Hamilton to win following a dramatic last lap overtake after Sebastian Vettel, after the German got caught out on a damp patch and ran wide, dropping to second.

Vettel won in 2013, on a race which saw the first race-related fatality in twelve years when marshal Mark Robinson was run over by a recovery vehicle, and the accident happened while marshals were removing the Sauber of Esteban Gutiérrez after the Mexican had spun off during the closing stages of the race.

Despite the Mercedes domination at the beginning of the V6 hybrid era, the 2014 race was the only one not won by the Silver Arrows after an ERS issue. That allowed Daniel Ricciardo to take his first win as it ended behind the safety car following a collision between Sergio Perez and Felipe Massa.

Hamilton would win three in a row between 2015 and 2017. But his 2019 victory during his title fight with Vettel saw the German overtake Hamilton for the lead-off track. Hamilton was squeezed towards the outside wall and was forced to slow down to avoid a collision. Vettel was given a five-second penalty, meaning he had to build a five-second lead and failed.

After the race, rather than park his car in parc ferme, Vettel pulled over much earlier in the pit lane and had to be collected by an official to attend the podium. On the way, Vettel removed the #1 sign from in front of Hamilton’s car and moved it to the empty space where his car should have been parked.

Following a Covid hiatus, the race returned in 2022, with Max Verstappen taking pole in changeable conditions ahead of Alonso. In the race, Verstappen held off Sainz in the final fifteen laps despite the heavy pressure from Sainz to take his sixth win of the season. The Red Bull and Ferrari had been close thanks to a late safety car caused by Yuki Tsunoda locking up as he exited the pits and crashed the Alpha Tauri at Senna (Turn Two). During the final sprint, Sainz couldn’t get close enough along Casino Straight to try and overtake.

Hamilton finished third ahead of teammate George Russell, while Leclerc recovered from nineteenth thanks to a grid penalty to finish fifth after penalty after taking a new power unit. A post-race penalty for weaving down the straight saw Alonso drop from seventh at the flag to ninth behind Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou. Lance Stroll rounded out the top ten finishers in his home race.

2023 saw a rematch between Verstappen and Alonso, but the Aston Martin was no match for the Red Bull, which took an eight-second win. Behind it was a rematch of 2007 with Alonso and Hamilton fighting for second, nearly colliding in the pit lane, before the safety car. On the restart, Alonso remained ahead before Hamilton h Hamilton switched to the medium tyres at his second pit stop while the Spaniard stuck with the hards they had used for their second stint. The seven-time champion could do nothing about his old rival.

2024 saw George Russell and Verstappen set identical lap times, with Russell taking the pole, having set the time on the first run in Q3. Mercedes were having their strongest weekend of the season so far following the latest row of upgrades. Lando Norris put his McLaren third in what was another close qualifying; he was two hundredths off pole, and nine hundredths faster than his teammate Oscar Piastri. McLaren also could have been a threat for pole, while Piastri was just over a tenth off pole.

Verstappen won an action-packed race after taking the lead by undercutting Norris at the final round of stops, and the McLaren driver was unable to close the gap. He had been caught out by the timing of the safety car, which was called just after he passed the pit entry and then was caught out by the timing of the safety car.

At that phase of the race, Norris was trying to build a sufficient advantage to come out in the lead, and it was close – he looked to be set to race wheel to wheel with Verstappen as the McLaren exited the pits. But Norris lost grip on the damp area off-line and Verstappen was able not only to retain the lead but also to finish the lap nearly four seconds ahead.

Race & Circuit Guide

Round

05 of 22

Race

Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada 2026

Venue

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Parc Jean-Drapeau, Montreal, Quebec

Configuration

2002

Circuit Length

4.361 km (2.709 mi)

Sprint

Laps

24

Race Distance

104.664km (64.995 mi)

Grand Prix

Laps

70

Race Distance

305.270 km (189.694 mi)

Lap Record

Race

01:13.078 (Valtteri Bottas, Mercedes, W10, 2019)

Outright

01:10.240 (Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari, SF90, 2019)

Previous Current Winners

Sir Lewis Hamilton (7)

Max Verstappen (3)

George Russell (1)

Most Wins (Drivers)

Sir Lewis Hamilton (7)

Most Wins (Constructors)

Ferrari (14)

Most Wins (Engine Manufacture)

Fast facts

The 2001 Canadian Grand Prix was unique in that it was the first time two brothers finished 1st and 2nd in an F1 race. Verstappen set his fastest time around forty minutes into the session, putting himself ahead of his former teammates, with Carlos Sainz slotting into third. Sainz was comfortably faster than George Russell, who was just over a quarter of a second further behind.

FP2 Russell topped the session with a 12.123, going just under three hundredths ahead of Lando Norris. Russell looked fast throughout the first half of the session as he matched the McLaren with his teammate Kimi Antonelli, a quarter of a second behind Norris.

FP3 saw Norris top the times with an 11.799 as he went just over three-quarters of a tenth faster than Charles Leclerc. Russell was third, a tenth further behind Leclerc in what was one of the closest sessions of the season, as Lewis Hamilton underlined the Ferrari’s pace, a tenth off Russell in fourth

Qualifying saw Russell beat Verstappen by just over a tenth and a half to secure pole. The Mercedes driver found a quarter of a second on his final run in Q3 to set a 10.899, Russell snatched pole away from Verstappen by a tenth and a half, moments after the Red Bull driver had himself taken pole away from Piastri.

Russell took victory, finishing a quarter of a second ahead of Verstappen after the race finished behind the safety car following a collision between the two McLaren drivers in the closing stages. Russell’s teammate, Kimi Antonelli, finished third nearly eight-tenths behind Verstappen

In a scene reminiscent of the collision between the two McLarens in nearly the same place in 2011, as Norris tried to pass Piastri as they crossed the line to start lap sixty-six, Norris tried to go for a small gap but found himself squeezed against the wall and then hit the wall as his teammate fended him off.

But the incidents were different yet bear the same echoes of one of the greatest Grands Prix of all time. In 2011, Lewis Hamilton had some of his car alongside Jenson Button, who moved over slightly. This time, Norris did not have space to edge alongside and appeared to misjudge the manoeuvre.

Pole Position

George Russell
Mercedes
01:10.899

Podium

Po

Name

Nat

Team

Time

Points

1

George Russell

GBR

Mercedes

01:37:52.688

25

2

Max Verstappen

NED

Red Bull – Honda RBPT

+00:00.228

18

3

Andrea Kimi Antonelli

ITA

Mercedes

+00:01.014

15

Fastest

Lap

George Russell

GBR

Mercedes

01:14.199

Championship Standings

Drivers’ Championship

Constructors Championship

Po

Name

Points

Constructor

Points

1

Andrea ‘Kimi’ Antonelli

100

Mercedes

180

2

George Russell

80

Ferrari

112

3

Charles Leclerc

63

McLaren – Mercedes

94

4

Lando Norris

51

Red Bull – Ford RBPT

30

5

Lewis Hamilton

49

Alpine – Mercedes

21

What to watch for?

After the last race, the ‘reset’ caused by the tweaks to the regulations in terms of headlines didn’t change the fact that Mercedes has the advantage still at this stage of the season. Kimi Antonelli certainly has made a strong start and continued that in Miami to move twenty points ahead of his teammate George Russell. This battle will continue all season.

Mercedes, however, is aware, as we have been saying since testing, that this isn’t a 2014 situation, but they will be looking to build on their dominance of the season so far when they bring their first big upgrades, as they want to build the gap. The most likely challengers based on the progress seen since the start of the season are McLaren fighting back, given the turnaround in the last two races.

It appears to me that McLaren is coming back towards being a challenger and Ferrari has slipped back a bit, but that could be the ebb and flow of the season, as there is a long way to go, and there could be points where they bring upgrades before Ferrari and the other way round. The fight for best-of-the-rest over the last few years has been better than the fight in some cases, as close, if not better, than the fight for second.

Montreal is a hybrid street and permanent circuit very similar to Melbourne, which was a circuit where Mercedes has been strong in the past. You need to balance driveability, straight-line speed and cornering. At the same time, pushing without crashing is key to unlocking lap time and finding time limits, and confidence is key once again, as it will bite back. As always, that brings a risk of a safety car, VSC and some kind of interruption to the races or qualifying sessions this weekend.

You need to be on it from the start, and we only have an hour of practice going into sprint qualifying, as this feels like a race. You need to build that confidence throughout the weekend, as that can make or break a driver’s or team’s weekend here, as we saw with Lando Norris last year crashing into teammate.

Red Bull is looking increasingly unlikely, unless there is a major turnaround by Silverstone in early July, not to be fighting for the championship. But they might have an interesting fight just to stay in the top four. They face a big challenge to come back. Isack Hadjar needs a good result, or the pressure will start to build on him, but I think this is different, as the team isn’t looking like a realistic title contender.

Ferrari, I feel, needs a good weekend. To me, it feels like they’ve underdelivered this season, though I think they have a good basis; they need more speed and performance to be fighting at the front again. The question is, can they deliver a strong turnaround before the pressure to deliver from the Italian media starts asking questions about leadership and the line-up will come.

The midfield, as we have seen all season, has been tight. Though they are behind the top four, it has been hard to read, though Red Bull has slipped into that group with Alpine and Haas close, and they might become a headache for Red Bull during the development war.

Haas, however, I feel need to prove they can keep up in the development war as they over a course of a season have for most of their time gone backwards. Though last season they appeared to get better mainly through optimisation, and if they can do that along with upgrades, they could be a solid contender if they can keep up.

2024 vs 2025
