The Australian hit back after teammate Lando Norris topped both Friday’s sessions with a 14.916 which put him just over three hundredths ahead of the Englishman. McLaren has looked strong all weekend in Budapest as it appears to be becoming a title battle between the two teammates.

Piastri was more than three-tenths quicker than Norris’ pole effort in Budapest last year, highlighting the incredible level of performance the runaway Constructors’ Championship leaders are consistently producing in 2025. McLaren appeared to unleash more of their pace during the lunchtime session.

Charles Leclerc was third, but the Ferrari driver was over a quarter of a second off Norris, as he went nearly half a second ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Ferrari have started to find their form and Hamilton an eight-time winner at the Hungaroring in recent races, has started to get more confident in the car, as well as beginning to challenge Leclerc on pace.

Kimi Antonelli put his Mercedes fifth going six hundredths behind the seven-time champion, as the Italian looks to recover from his mid-season dip in form and confidence after a series of early exits from qualifying. The two Aston Martins have also shown strong form this weekend, Fernando Alonso half a tenth behind the Mercedes and just over a second ahead of teammate Lance Stroll, with George Russel a hundredth behind.

Red Bull’s difficult weekend continues, Max Verstappen could only manage twelfth, a second and a quarter off Piastri, while his teammate Yuki Tsunoda could only manage nineteenth. But the Japanese driver did do some testing early on, when he did a run on mediums Tsunoda appeared to struggle with oversteer.

Gabriel Bortoletto put his Sauber ninth over a tenth behind Russell as he went just over four hundredths faster than teammate Nico Hulkenberg, completing the top ten. Sauber is looking in a good position to extend their streak of five successive grand prix weekends at which they’ve scored points. The top ten was covered by just over a second.

Ollie Bearman put his Haas eleventh the Englishman missing out on the top ten by just over a tenth, as he went three and a half hundredths faster than Max Verstappen. Red Bull continues to struggle with challenging at the front. Following Friday’s practice sessions in Friday’s practice session the Dutchman said, “nothing really works” when it came to set up and it was like “driving on ice.”

Franco Colapinto was nearly a tenth behind the Red Bull as he went nearly a quarter of a tenth ahead of Liam Lawson, followed by the two Williams with Carlos Sainz nearly a tenth faster than teammate Alex Albon.

Albon, Esteban Ocon, Pierre Gasly, a frustrated Tsunoda, and Hadjar brought up the rear and will be seeking improvements ahead of the crucial Qualifying hour at the Hungaroring, on Saturday afternoon

Related

HUNGARIAN GP – Lando Norris leads a McLaren one-two, going three tenths faster than Oscar Piastri in second practice

HUNGARIAN GP – Lando Norris leads Oscar Piastri by just under two hundredths in first practice

Welcome to the Hungarian Grand Prix – 31072025

Oscar Piastri led a McLaren one-two in third practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix.
