Ricciardo will be replaced by junior/reserve driver Liam Lawson.

Ricciardo was caught up in fellow Australian Oscar Piastri in the early stages of Friday’s second practice session. Moments after Piastri crashed at Hugenholtz, Ricciardo also made an error and hit the outside barriers while taking avoiding action.

Ricciardo’s steering wheel snapped violently upon impacting the wall, with the thirty-four-year-old complaining on the team radio about wrist pain. Ricciardo was soon taken to a nearby hospital in Haarlem for X-rays, spotted with his left arm in a sling.

Ricciardo appeared to suffer the injury during the impact with the barrier, complaining of damage to his hand over team radio before struggling to get out of the car as he held his left arm to his chest.

This type of injury can take six weeks to recover from which could mean he misses not only this race but possibly the next six Grand Prix. He possibly won’t race until Austin in the second half of October.

This evening Red Bull advisor Marko confirmed to Motorsport.com that Ricciardo had sustained a broken left hand, taking him out of action for the remainder of the weekend.

Red Bull junior Lawson, who was on standby at Zandvoort as the designated reserve driver for both Red Bull teams, will replace Ricciardo from Saturday’s FP3 session onwards.

Ricciardo returned to Red Bull having been dropped by McLaren at the end of 2022, but was first reserve driver. Last month Alpha Tauri decided to drop Nyck de Vries because of his poor performance, this weekend would have been his third race of the season.

Lawson appeared in two practice sessions for AlphaTauri last season, along with one for Red Bull, and would be making his debut in a competitive F1 environment if he were to drive in Qualifying or the race.

He had been tipped as a replace Nyck de Vries from Hungary onwards, but Red Bull instead handed the seat to Ricciardo to inject more experience into the struggling AlphaTauri line-up.

Meanwhile, McLaren confirmed that Piastri suffered a small cut to his finger from his crash, and is confidence he can “bounce back” on Saturday.

Daniel Ricciardo will miss this weekend’s Dutch and possibly next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix after breaking his hands in a crash in second practice.
