The Red Bull driver set a 23.397 in the wet which put him nearly three tenths faster than the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc, with the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso going third but just over a second behind Leclerc.

Red Bull are seeking their hundredth F1 victory this weekend, while Verstappen can draw level with Ayrton Senna’s win tally of forty-one.

Leclerc was the only driver as well to get within a second of the two time champion as the rain intensified during the final minutes. Kevin Magunssen was fourth, the Haas driver was first out on track setting a 34.889 on the full wet tyre but ended the session a second and a half off the pace.

In Soa Paulo last year the Dane took a surprise pole in similar conditions, he improved by ten seconds doing a 24.715. That put Magnussen fourth five hundredths ahead of the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz.

The Spaniard was the only driver to make a major error during the session, he lost control of the Ferrari after dipping his tyre on the grass, and spun into the wall at Turn One bringing out the red flag. That saw him cause huge damage to both the front and rear of the Ferrari.

Sainz is also facing an investigation by the stewards after twice impeding Alex Albon through the final chicane, which the Williams driver described as “dangerous”. Pierre Gasly was sixth going over a tenth faster than Lance Stroll and his former teammate Yuki Tsunoda.

Tsunoda was three tenths behind the Aston Martin that was despite the Alpha Tauri driver having several spins and managed to keep it out of the barriers. That put him three hundredths ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton, rounding out the top ten.

Bottas also found himself having to hold onto a loose mirror on his Alfa Romeo while trying to navigate the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in heavy rain.

Mercedes looked to struggle with the wet conditions, Lewis Hamilton going tenth just under two tenths off the pace, the seven time champion at one point said he was “wasting time” as the Silver Arrows struggled with tyre temperatures. But both Hamilton and teammate George Russell struggling for both grip and performance on track, as well grip with Russell only going fifteenth.

Oscar Piastri was twelfth going seven thousandths faster than his McLaren teammate Lando Norris. Norris was nearly two tenths faster than Alex Albon, with Russell half a hundredth behind in fifteenth. Nyck De Vries was a tenth faster than the Red Bull of Sergio Perez, Guanyu Zhou, Esteban Ocon with Logan Sargeant rounding out the field.

Related

Max Verstappen was fastest in third practice ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix.
