Sainz set his fastest time on the softs while Leclerc was left frustrated by the timing which the team put him out on track.

But as Sainz explored the limits of the bay area of the circuit he clipped the corner of Turn Nineteen, the exit of the section under the grandstand also caught out Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon, all escaping without damage.

George Russell put his Mercedes third going just over a further tenth behind Leclerc, while Mercedes looked strong in terms of pace the car still appears to be unsettled by the bumps. But the team was looking in decent shape with Lewis Hamilton going fifth two and a half tenths behind Russell, while Max Verstappen split the two Mercedes going two and a half tenths faster than the Mercedes.

This weekend is looking to be another race where Mercedes could be in the mix in Singapore, they were ahead of Verstappen by half a second. Mercedes have good pace this weekend and Hamilton’s lap time is a bit unrepresented as on his run was interrupted by traffic on his fast run.

However, the Dutchman could only manage seven laps while title rival Leclerc also had his evening interrupted by technical issues. Ocon’s clipping of the wall at the time was good enough for third, but the Alpine driver had to settle for sixth eight-tenths off the outright pace.

Valtteri Bottas put his Alfa Romeo seventh fastest going nearly a tenth ahead of Fernando Alonso, allowing him to spilt the Alpine’s. Sergio Perez was ninth the Mexican a second behind teammate Verstappen while going three-tenths faster than Lance Stroll who rounded out the top ten.

Perez’s Friday evening has been far from the ideal start, he missed the first half of the session with a drive train issue and then could only manage eleven laps. Red Bull was working on both of its cars in its garage, while Ferrari reattached Leclerc’s floor, which meant they ran out of sync with the rest of the pack when they did emerge.

When he started his qualifying sim, Perez had a massive slide at Turn Five onto the longest straight up to Memorial Corner (Seven) which cost him a lot of time leaving him a second and a half behind Sainz.

It was clear none of the Dutchman, Perez or Leclerc would be able to conduct the usual late-FP2 high runs and indeed they were switched to qualifying simulation runs for the closing stages. But the nature of Marina Bay makes for errors, divers locking up and going down the escape roads but there was no major incidents

Lando Norris put his McLaren eleventh going two-tenths faster than Sebastian Vettel, allowing the Englishman to split the Aston Martin’s. Pierre Gasly was fourteenth, but his session ended with him having to leap from his Alpha Tauri, as flames burst from the rear of the car.

Guanyu Zhou was fifteenth going six-tenths faster than the Williams of Alex Albon. Gasly’s teammate Yuki Tsunoda was seventeenth, ahead of Daniel Ricciardo. Mick Schumacher was nineteenth ahead of Nicolas Latifi by almost nine tenths behind.

Related

SINGAPORE GP – Lewis Hamilton tops FP1 eight hundredths ahead of Max Verstappen

F1 Today – Singapore Prixview – 29/09/2022

PRIXVIEW – Singapore Grand Prix

Carlos Sainz led a Ferrari one-two in second practice for the Singapore Grand Prix, the Spaniard set a 42.587 going two-tenths faster than teammate Charles Leclerc.
