The Ferrari driver set the fastest time as the track evolved throughout the first session to set a 31.098 putting himself seven hundredths faster than the Mercedes of George Russell with his early championship rival Max Verstappen third.

Mercedes were the biggest surprise in the session, they appeared to have gotten on top of the porpoising issue which they believe has been holding them back. Although Lewis Hamilton could only manage seventh eight and a half tenths off the pace, its likely however that gap will close.

The session was for the drivers a learning session with minor mistakes as drivers started to learn the 3.3mi Miami International Autodrome. Ferrari again looking after the opening practice session the team to beat as Mercedes looked to be more settled on the street style circuit.

Russell spilt the two rivals, the Mercedes driver going just over a tenth faster than Verstappen. Mercedes looking to have a radical upgrade to both its front and rear wings, however, they have been playing down the significance of the upgrade for this weekend. Verstappen going third three hundredths faster than his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez.

Red Bull appearing to struggle with the high temperatures around Miami Beach, which could be an issue for qualifying and the race as they were unable to switch the tyres. Carlos Sainz had to settle for fourth, the Spaniard suffered big spins through Turn Five and Sixth.

Leclerc had a lower-speed spin while learning the track early in the session, and Verstappen brushed the wall coming out of Snakes Canal (Turn Sixteen), with no damage to his car. Ferrari has brought a new rear wing, on balance appeared the quickest car in the session, although Verstappen was struggling with his car overheating in the Florida heat.

The session saw all the drivers explore the limits of the circuit, which led to yellow flags and several changes of leads before Leclerc went fastest. Ferrari are hoping to bounce back after a difficult weekend at Imola, with Leclerc tied on two wins with Verstappen.

Pierre Gasly put his Alpha Tauri fifth-fastest going three hundredths faster than the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz. Alex Albon was seventh ahead of Hamilton and could only manage eighth, the Mercedes driver eight and a half tenths off, although his last lap was compromised.

Kevin Magnussen put his Haas ninth going two-hundredths faster than the McLaren’s of Daniel Ricciardo, rounding out the top ten. Ricciardo was a quarter of a second faster than teammate Lando Norris, however, is under investigation for blocking the Haas of Mick Schumacher.

Fernando Alonso put his Alpine twelfth going almost a tenth and a half faster than the Alfa Romeo of Guanyu Zuho. Sebastian Vettel was fourteenth going ahead of Esteban Ocon, the second Alpine going nearly a tenth and a half faster than Lance Stroll to split the Aston Martin’s.

Valtteri Bottas was seventeenth going three tenths fastest than Yuki Tsunoda. While Mick Schumacher was nineteenth ahead of Nicolas Latifi who rounded out the field.

Related

F1 Today – Miami Prixview – 05/05/2022

PRIXVIEW – Miami Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc was fastest in the first practice session ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.
